This 1-day workshop will focus on the delivery of grazing management strategies designed to improve both soil health and water quality. These workshops will be delivered by Jim Gerrish, American Grazing Lands Services. Jim has extensive experience as an instructor for these topics both in the US and internationally.

Module 1. - Grazing Management Based on Ecological Processes
1. Understanding ecosystem processes, soil health and grazing management.
2. Solar energy capture, water cycle, mineral cycle and biodiversity.
3. Plant physiology, plant growth, root growth, rest period, organic matter.
4. How diverse mixes of plant species improves soil health, reduces erosion, protects water quality, extends the grazing season and improves animal performance.
5. Stocking rate, stock density, intake, residual, balancing rest and use.
6. Forage varieties and nutrition.
7. Grazing effects on the plant community. 
8. Winter feeding practices. 
9. Healthy soil creates healthy plants and animals resulting in healthier people

Module 2. - Developing Off-stream Livestock Water Systems
1. Water is the most limiting factor to grazing.
2. Cattle behavior – how much do they need, what kind of water is available, how far will they travel.
3. Selecting the correct location for a water site.
4. Selecting the correct type of water development for the animals it will serve.
5. Installation Cost.

Module 3. - Cost Effective Fencing for Riparian & Wetland Management.
1. Grazing management requires keeping animals where you need them to graze.
2. Selecting the correct type of fence to do the job.
3. Permanent Fence Temporary Fence – Electric Fencing Materials Installation Cost.

Module 4. - Cost: Benefit Analysis for Alternative Management Systems.
1. How do I know it will pay?
2. The dollars and sense of grazing
3. Cost of developing water and fencing for grazing
4. The value of alternative forages and extending the grazing season.
5. Economics and environmental benefits of managed grazing.
6. Cow size.
7. Calving dates.
8. The cost of putting up hay.
