Who to expect:

Robin Boudreau – “Something that Matters”

“Our deepest grief is often a launching pad for our life’s greatest work.”

Loss is real and it is hard. We all have an opportunity to use grief to propel ourselves and serve others. Robin Bourdeau navigated the loss of her son, Beau, by choosing joy, reflecting on the challenges, and redirecting her life’s path through founding No Foot Too Small. Beau has inspired the No Foot Too Small (NTFS) mission – “Celebrate Angels, unite Families, and Build Birthing + Bereavement Suites – nationwide.” The first suite will be built right here in Iowa City, IA at the University of Iowa Hospital. Robin’s perspective on life has changed in a local delivery suite while holding the hands of parents preparing to say ‘goodbye’. For so long, the topic of pregnancy and infant loss has been silenced, leaving those who suffer loss to feel isolated; Robin intends to change that

Robin’s story will remind us to be vulnerable and that being vulnerable means being authentic. She has learned that while Beau is not here, his purpose is powerful.

Get to know Robin: In Iowa City Robin considers herself a “foodie” and enjoys pulling friends together to find food at local establishments. Robin also loves to travel near and far, especially to the beach!

Jerad Ruth – “Brotherly Love”

Life can be tragic. This is not a story with some awesome ending. It is a story about two brothers. One of those brothers was tired of having feelings of pain for over 30 years and decided to make a change about it, the other remains incarcerated. Jerad has found meaning from this experience and has learned to take action upon himself and that he needed to stop expecting others to make the first move. Jerad wants to remind us that we are not special and you should never give someone a job that you are not willing to do yourself. Everyone is carrying something difficult, and you control how that affects you. There comes a point where you realize you need to let it go.

Jerad’s story will serve as a reminder that what you do, and how you react to situations in life is on you. This is your environment, your thoughts, and your happiness. And sometimes we just need to stop talking and listen. Listen to others, to nature, to yourself

Get to know Jerad: In and around Iowa City Jerad likes to do nature hikes and balances that with eating, anywhere! One of the most meaningful places that he hikes is a cliff near Sugar Bottom overlooking the reservoir. Jerad is a creator of art, video productions, and music.

Carlos Honore – “The Man Today”

It takes most people a lifetime to find their purpose, but Carlos found his purpose early in life. Carlos can recall two pivotal moments in his life, the time he pulled a gun on a guy during a fight downtown Iowa City and then being introduced to sports. Through his life experiences, Carlos has learned that he must carry himself the way he would like society to see him and has positively used the outcomes of his life events to mold himself. Carlos spends time educating others about the issues that affect our youth’s learning as the founder of Fifth Ward Saints Athletics, a Social-Emotional Athletic Development Program that uses sports to build relationships and engage players and their families with community resources. These trusting relationships and environment allow players and their families to express ongoing issues that are negatively affecting the family system. It also allows a safe place for families to accept recommended referrals/resources by volunteer social workers.

Carlos’s story will teach us to keep pushing, regardless of how bad things in our lives may appear.

Get to know Carlos: In Iowa City you will likely find Carlos enjoying pizza at Pagliai’s. Outside of his life’s work, he enjoys spending time working on classic cars.

Lindsay Leahy – “Joy After Abuse”

You have the power to define who you will be…no matter what. Lindsay’s first memory of her father was seeing him in handcuffs, and ironically, she was handcuffed by his actions for most of her life. It took some time to see that she was using what she had suffered from as an excuse to hold back in her relationships, career, and life. Lindsay has learned people do the best they can with what they have and what they know. She will share experiences of how being honest with yourself about your feelings and experiences will allow you to accept and appreciate who you are, be authentic with others, and then accelerate your ability to achieve your dreams and be the best version of yourself.

Lindsay’s story will prove that forgiveness can change the course of your life and pain and adversity can be the best teachers, as long as you seek the lessons. She shows how openness and vulnerability, paired with an “if it is to be, it is up to me,” attitude will gift you a life of peace and success you never dreamed.

Get to know Lindsay: If it is a Sunday, you will find her at Church otherwise she will be at the Early Bird coffee shop. It is her version of “Cheers” and she knows everyone when she walks in. She also loves and respects the hell out of the owner, Brooke Fitzgerald. You can also find Lindsay giving back to Big Brothers Big Sisters or doing burpees in her basement until she thinks she could puke while listening to one of her favorite authors or a podcast.
