Description

Gravestones and Cemeteries: Sources of Clues to Your Family’s History.

Join the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando (JGSGO) to learn the importance of Jewish cemetery records. The information and symbols found on gravestones (“matzevot”) can help create your family tree. Finding the gravestones and translating their inscriptions will be the topic discussed by one of our members, Dr. Edward Bromberg. He will also be available to help attendees translate Hebrew from their own photos of gravestones. Please bring copies of photos of gravestones you would like help with.

Edward Bromberg has been a resident of Central Florida since 2004, but his great-Uncle and family were part of the original Jewish community that arrived in 1912 from Pittsburgh. He is a long-time member of JGSGO, as well as a member of the boards of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando and Central Florida Hillel. He is a past president of SOJC (Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation).

Ed first got interested in genealogy around 30 years ago when a 3rd cousin assembled a typed family tree for her daughter’s bat mitzvah. (To this day she is the “Official family genealogist” maintaining the family GENI Site.) Being a strong computer user at that time, he searched around for genealogy software, and came across the first release of Family Tree Maker, which he purchased and entered the data from his cousin’s typed tree. At that time he was busy with work and family and so did not do much research other than add new family members to the tree, as well as checking out family tombstones when he visited the family cemeteries over the years. In addition to a detailed description of how to understand Jewish tombstones, he will describe a few family genealogy pieces of information he discovered during his visits to family cemetery plots. Now that he is retired he has more time to do genealogy research, especially about his family that originally settled in Orlando in 1912.
