Event description

This symposium continues discussion and debate about 'Graphic Design Research and the Research Excellence Framework' that began at Sheffield Hallam University in October 2018. It will, again, bring together senior managers, researchers and graphic design educators to define some important terms of reference for the future of graphic design research. Building on recent scholarship* it will speculate on a future for graphic design studies and the need for more coherence, consensus, stability, and standards in graphic design research. Themes will include REF criteria, research leadership challenges, field formation, and views from graphic design educators.

Confirmed speakers:

Professor Teal Triggs

Professor Paul Wells

James Corazzo

Professor Anne Boddington

The event is co-organised by the Graphic Design Educators’ Network and the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design (CHEAD).

Tickets are FREE, but you/your institution must be members of CHEAD or have participated Graphic Design Educators’ Network events (you can join GDEN here) and are strictly limited to 2 per institution. Lunch is not provided.

Getting to Loughborough

Regular Intercity services operate between Loughborough and other main line towns - including daily trains to and from London St Pancras International, 90 minutes away. Loughborough's railway station is just ten minutes away from the campus. There is a regular bus service which operates between campus and the station every ten minutes during term time.

Taxis are normally available to/from the station and the journey should cost around £5 - £6.

Coach and bus services to and from other parts of Leicestershire and the UK operate from the centre of Loughborough. Travel by National Express or regional bus services to Loughborough then connect with local bus town services to the Loughborough University campus.

Loughborough's nearest motorway link is the M1; the campus is just two miles from Junction 23. The university is clearly sign posted on all the other main approach roads to Loughborough.

Parking is available on campus, but is limited. If the campus car parks reach capacity the Security and Parking team will direct you to park in Loughborough town centre where there are a number of car parks available. For more information on the car parks available in town you can visit the council’s website at

For further transport details to Loughborough University see here.

There are many other accommodation options in Loughborough city centre, a short cab/bus ride from the venue.
