Event description
Dawn Barrett considers the banknotes, stamps, books, and posters of the Dutch designer RDE “Ootje” Oxenaar.

About this Event

Our fourth Standing-Room Only Lecture will have us looking closely at the posters, books, stamps, and banknotes of a towering figure of Dutch design: RDE “Ootje” Oxenaar (1929–2017). From 1964–87, Ootje Oxenaar was responsible for the revolutionary design of the Dutch paper currency, including the 50 guilder “sunflower” and 250 guilder “lighthouse” banknotes which were internationally celebrated as the most beautiful and least-counterfeited money in the world. As head of the art and design advisory bureau at the Dutch PTT from 1976–94 he was responsible for commissioning art and design for the largest public concern in the Netherlands.

Our speaker, Dawn Barrett, is a strategist, designer, author, and consultant. She was Dean of the Art + Architecture Division at RISD and President of Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She was also the design- and life-partner of Oxenaar, and we'll be lucky to have her insider’s view of his remarkable work.

Our Standing-Room Only Lectures aim to present short talks about graphic design, typography, and collecting. The lectures are kept to about twenty minutes because—true to its name—the series takes place in our standing-room only gallery. So, wear comfortable shoes and bring a short attention span.

Doors open at 6p for pre-talk mingling.
