Tour Description

Tour Hosts: Don Alexander, Kristine Krumrey and Gloria Venczel

This workshop will compare and contrast the treatment of public space and the sense of place in three contiguous areas: Granville Island/ South False Creek, South Granville Rise and the Delamont portion of eastern Kitsilano. We will be using a "sense of place" checklist to decode the successful elements of public space. These skills for urban design analysis through the checklist are transferrable.

Each area represents a different time period.

Delamont is part of a "streetcar suburb" oriented around the tram line that ran along 4th Ave., today home to heritage houses, four-storey walk-ups, and important environmental organizations like the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation and City Farmer.

Granville Island/ South False Creek emerged from a visionary period in the early 70s when there was an emphasis on diverse housing tenures and a reduced role for the automobile.

The high rise condos of South Granville Rise are somewhat more car-oriented, but provide pedestrian cut-throughs and easy access to transit.

Each of these areas represents very different ways of thinking about urban space and possess very different senses of place.
