Grants 101: Introduction to Grants

Tuesday, October 1, 2019

9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Grants 101 is an introductory seminar to the grants process designed for those with no grants experience. During this 1-day active learning seminar, participants will be introduced to all phases of the grants process including:

  1. Identifying your organization’s funding priorities that are most appropriate for grant funding

  2. Assessing your organization’s grant management capacity

  3. Researching, identifying, and communicating with prospective grant funders

  4. Reviewing grant guidelines to understand a funder’s proposal requirements

  5. Understanding the components and characteristics of successful grant proposals

  6. Reviewing grant proposals to identify the do’s and don’ts of effective proposal writing

  7. Implementing effective grants management strategies

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Acquire a baseline understanding of the entire grants process

  • Learn how to identify appropriate grant opportunities and prospective funders

  • Learn how to prepare a competitive grant proposal

  • Acquire tips to effectively manage a grant award

Prerequisite: None

Note: Grants 101 does not address the grants process for academic research grants.


About the Instructor

Catherine Raymond, Ph.D.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Catherine Raymond has assisted numerous organizations to effectively plan for their organizational future as well as to plan, implement, and evaluate their programs and services. Her focus is in the areas of arts and culture, education/STEM, environment, human services, and youth development. Throughout her career, she has developed extensive expertise in writing award-winning grant proposals for many nonprofit organizations. In addition to her grants development work, Dr. Raymond assists nonprofits in the areas of strategic planning and program development and evaluation. She has also taught courses on these topics at Florida International University (FIU) and the University of Miami. She has a Ph.D. in Public Affairs (with a focus on nonprofit management and capacity building) as well as an M.S. in Adult Education/Human Resource Development, both from FIU. Her undergraduate degree is from Cornell University in Microbiology.

Dr. Raymond consistently receives very high ratings from Grants 101 and Grants 102 participants as a result of her engaging instructional style, her knowledge, and the usefulness of the resources she provides to seminar participants.
