DESCRIPTION

This training is for the GrandMA2 Console Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The class is 9am-5pm both days and lunch is provided

What can I expect attending a grandMA2 class to be like?
grandMA2 was developed to accommodate multiple ways of thinking across every possible market that will be using the software. We follow a curriculum which, in addition to teaching a list of skills necessary to be able to run a small to mid size show, also contains an abundance of information spanning all of these markets and users.
Additionally, all classes are taught on real MA2 consoles (grandMA2 full, light, or ultra-light), with 2 external monitors attached and a computer running MA 3D networked with the console. Navigating the hardware is an important step to becoming an efficient programmer, therefore we lay the groundwork to be able to do so comfortably. The class is designed for two people per console and those attending are encouraged to switch places during class to get the most out of their hands on experience.

What do I need to know before attending a class?
We provide the tools to navigate grandMA2 software for those with at least a background in the lighting fundamentals. Attendees should have some preexisting knowledge of - or experience with - these essential concepts. If you are unfamiliar with any or all of those items, we encourage you to learn more about them before signing up for a class. It is also highly recommended to use A.C.T resources to read up on all of the information that will be discussed to decide if a class is truly the next step in advancing your grandMA2 knowledge.

What should I bring to class?
We recommend you bring a notebook for note taking so as not to feel overwhelmed trying to remember all of the information presented.

Will I get any kind of paperwork to prove I took the class?
Some institutions have a reimbursement program for those who choose to further their education. In such cases we can provide a proof of attendance sheet to turn in for reimbursement of the class charge.

What will be gained from attending a grandMA2 class?
A 2-day class is not nearly enough time to hone a set of programming skills. Don't expect to be programming at lightning speed by the end. What you will come away with are the essential skills to be comfortable running the software for a small to mid size show. The class is an introduction of workflow, philosophies and best practices. We will also go over continued learning resources to keep all of the information fresh in your mind.

What should I do after class?
Practice makes perfect! Download the free software - or check with your local lighting company to see what kind of hardware they offer - and dedicate your time to committing everything learned in class to memory. The help manual is a great resource for memorizing keywords and syntax. If you are unsure about any fundamental philosophies click here. Tracking, effects, and MA tools such as MAtricks and Align take time, practice, and patience to master. Ultimately, experience is the best teacher.

Where are other places to research for lighting industry knowledge?
If you are interested in learning more about design, and the relationship between programming and design, we have a few educational resource recommendations:
  • There is a really great book called "The Automated Lighting Programmer's Handbook," by Brad Schiller, which breaks down lighting programming philosophies and offers up some good habits and practices.
  • PLSN magazine has great articles for those who are just wanting to get started, with awesome advice from professionals who have been there and done that.
  • The PLSN bookshelf contains many great books to read if you want to dive into the world of programming and design.
  • Live Design International is another industry publication with educational resources.
Online Resources for MA:
  • ma-share.net - This is a worldwide forum for users of MA Lighting products, where anyone can offer advice, share opinions, or ask questions. You can be sure to have an answer from somewhere, with a community of so many dedicated people.
  • help2.malighting.com - This is the collection of MA Lighting product manuals online. It contains a wealth of information, including simple tutorials to get you started.
  • grandMA2 onPC,MA 3D, and VPU - All of MA's software is free to download and practice with at home. You can find the downloads on our website: actlighting.com/downloads.
  • actlighting.com/support - Our team here at A.C.T writes and records tutorials and guides to help you navigate the software or troubleshoot common problems.
  • A.C.T Tech Talk Webinars - Sign up for weekly discussions on all things MA.

Advanced Class Thursday-Friday
User Defined Topics + Q&A Class

The grandMA2 is one of the hottest lighting control consoles in the world today, specified on productions at the highest levels across a broad spectrum of the industry. Outside of the basic programming functions there are many advanced features that make the desk unique. This one-day class will touch upon what skills the users deem necessary to advance their grandMA2 knowledge. Upon signing up for the class, potential participants will be asked to provide a list of topics they would want to learn in more detail. Without that list we won’t know what to teach. The session will also be an avenue for on the spot Q&A. Participants must have a basic understanding of automated fixtures and DMX, and also must have experience with the grandMA2 range.

Session highlights:
1. Attendees pick the topics
2. Advancing depth of MA2 knowledge
3. Live Q&A

Target Audience: Lighting designers and programmers with an understanding of automated fixtures, DMX, and programming with the grandMA2, who are interested in advancing their knowledge of the grandMA2 platform.
