Brief History

Knights of the Orthodox Order of St. John

Russian Grand Priory

This ancient Order is the true continuation of the Hospitaller tradition of the Sovereign Order of the Knights Hospitaller of of St. John of Jerusalem. It started in the early days of the crusades circa 1046 when a group of knights established the first hospitals in Jerusalem for the sick and wounded. They served all people regardless of race, religion or status – the well-to-do and the poor alike and became known as the "Knights Hospitaller". The Order moved to Rhodes and then to Malta where their 8-pointed cross became widely known as the “Maltese Cross”. They were forced to leave because of the Napoleonic take-over of Malta and the largest group went to Russia. There, Emperor Paul I was elected Grand Master of the entire Order and it became an ecumenical order including those of all faiths and under the protection of the Romanovs. After the Bolshevic revolution, the Order moved to Europe and then to the U.S. where it continues today under sanction of the Orthodox Church via the Patriarch of All of Russia, Alexy II and recognized by the United Nations as an NGO. It is organized as a humanitarian Order dedicated to service to humanity. Count Nicholas Bobrinskoy was the first Grand Prior in the U.S. followed by Prince Michael of Russia and Count Alexander Woronzoff-Dashkoff. The ceremony in Hawaii will be officiated by Grande Chancellor, Her Excellency Countess Nicholas Bobrinskoy.
