Event Details

¡Gran Tango! is a concert of terrific string orchestra music that features repertoire from the great Hispanic tradition in classical music. Guest artists with the orchestra will be the celebrated soprano, Amaya Arberas, from the Basque country of Spain, acclaimed Catalan composer Anna Cazurra-Basté, and internationally renowned pianist Martin Söderberg, from the Canary Islands,

Our program will feature the World Premiere Performance of “Gran Tango” by Anna Cazurra-Basté, as well as other Hispanic repertoire like Rapsodia Sinfónica by Joaquín Turina, the “Preludio” to Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4 and Manuel de Falla’s “Siete Canciones Populares Españolas.”

This family-friendly concert by Symphony of the City of New York will bring members of its Hispanic audience a new work being added to the incredibly rich Hispanic musical tradition, as well as a complete program of music which they will seldom have the opportunity to hear. And it will acquaint its non-Hispanic members with important aspects of the wonderfully multi-faceted Hispanic musical tradition, and its highly talented musicians.

Symphony of the City of New York

Symphony of the City of New York is an orchestra based in New York with a mission to regularly program and perform music by women composers as well as music from cultures around the world,  In accomplishing this dual mandate, the Symphony is giving important but under-represented repertory a permanent place in our musical heritage. And in designing its concerts to include outstanding music that is rarely performed on other orchestral programs, the Symphony is creating a broader, more inclusive role for the symphony orchestra within a culture that embraces differences and celebrates diversity.
