Event description
The Graduate Program in Neuroscience at UIC welcomes you to attend this year's 7th Annual Neuroscience Day!

About this Event

This event features a talk by featured guest speaker, Dr. Marina Picciotto, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM in 109 SPH/PI, followed by a reception and poster session from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM in 160 SPI/PI.

Topic: "Smart or Happy? Regulation of Cognitive and Emotional Behaviors by Acetylcholine"

Marina Picciotto, Ph.D., is currently the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Neuroscience. She holds the Charles B.G. Professorship in Psychiatry and Deputy Chair for Basic Science at Yale University and is also Professor in the Departments of Neuroscience, Pharmacology, and the Child Study Center. Her research focuses on defining molecular mechanisms underlying normal behavior in mice and those related to psychiatric illness, with a particular focus on the function of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. Her laboratory uses molecular genetic strategies coupled with pharmacology to identify the role of individual receptors and signaling molecules in behaviors related to stress, reward, cognitive function, sensory processing, and food intake. Dr. Picciotto received her B.S. from Stanford University and her Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University where she worked with Dr. Paul Greengard. She conducted postdoctoral work with Professor Jean-Pierre Changeux at the Pasteur Institute before joining the faculty at Yale University. Dr. Picciotto is a member of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has served previously as a Councilor and as Treasurer of Society for Neuroscience, and is past-president of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.
