Sunday 8:30am-11:30am Multiple languages on the JVM offer the ability to write concise and expressive code. One thing that sets Groovy apart, more distinctively than a few others, is its ability to extend the program at runtime. Classes are open in Groovy and we can not only add methods, but we can synthesize methods as well, at runtime. This ability provides for quite an interesting set of flexibilities, paving the way to create highly dynamic applications, domain specific languages, lightweight configurable components, all with less code. In this workshop we will dive into metaprogramming in Groovy, using practical hands-on examples and make use of it to create some dynamic behavior. We will focus on concepts and techniques you can readily put to real use on your next project.

Sunday 8:30am-11:30am This introduction to Groovy for developers with a Java background will review the fundamentals of the language and as many advanced topics as time allows. We'll discuss collections, closures, the Groovy JDK, builders, AST transformations, file and database manipulation, and basic metaprogramming. Spock tests for the source code will be provided, as well as Gradle build files.

Sunday 1:30pm-4:30 The Groovy language provides a wide scope of metaprogramming capabilities, making it a ""very dynamic"" language. One of those aspects, AST transformations, is about changing the internal representation of a program before it is actually executed. For example, using the @Log annotation, you can transparently add a logger field into a class. Using @ToString, you can have the compiler generate the toString method for you. All those AST transformations are very powerful, but require a deeper knowledge of the compiler internals. In this workshop, we will introduce you from the beginning to AST transformations, describe the abstract syntax tree, setup a development environment and eventually, write some AST transformations so that you can contribute some in turn. The session will also show you some common traps, such as variable scoping, generics and compatibility with other AST transforms.

At the end of the workshop, you will have a clone of Foursquare on your mobile, with a backend in Grails running on the cloud. All that with one goal in mind: have fun!
