The Evidence Based Psychotherapist

Presenter:  Molyn Leszcz, MD, FRCPC, CGP, DFAGPA

Join us for a highly interactive, experiential conference featuring seasoned therapists leading process groups for all participants over the 2-day period, ongoing fishbowl group demonstrations led by Dr. Leszcz on both Friday and Saturday, as well as several brief lecture segments followed by Q+A with Dr. Leszcz.

This ONLINE workshop will examine the factors that contribute to therapist effectiveness in group therapy, looking at the finding that, although the psychotherapies are generally equivalently effective, not all therapists are equally effective. The presentation will address the research that guides the evidence based group therapist to maximize her effectiveness, with an associated focus on what unfolds at the level of the therapeutic relationship in group therapy that can improve or impede clinical effectiveness.

Course Description

Combining didactic and experiential learning , this presentation will examine the factors that contribute to group therapist effectiveness in group therapy, looking more deeply at the assumption that although the psychotherapies are generally effective, not all therapists are equally effective. The presentation will address what unfolds at the level of the therapeutic relationship in group therapy that can improve or impede clinical effectiveness. Areas that will be addressed include understanding the central role of group cohesion, empathy - both receptive and expressive, cultural attunement and cultural humility, therapeutic focus, activation of the here- and- now, the value of interpersonal approaches as an integrative model, therapeutic metacommunication, and the ethical application of the therapist's use of self, countertransference and judicious transparency. Discussion of clinical illustrations will be used as well, along with the use of demonstration groups led by the instructor.

Learning Objectives:

 Attendees will:

  1. Illustrate the factors that contribute to enhanced group psychotherapist effectiveness.
  2. Operationalize working as an evidence-based group therapist
  3. Maximize therapeutic opportunities within the patient-therapist relationship in the here – and - now of the group.
  4. Articulate the principles of therapeutic metacommunication and processing within the therapeutic relationship.
  5. Explore therapist use of self and judicious therapist transparency.

12 CE credits will be given for FULL attendance.

A link to participate in the Zoom Meeting will be distributed upon registration.
