Event description

Description

Like noir, like horror, like romance, Gothic cuts right to a specific feeling - or maybe a knot of feelings. It could be old or it could be fresh off the presses, you know it when it hits you, and you settle back into your doom buggy, eyes wide open... and wait.

We've covered three foundational gothic stories plus Daphne du Maurier, and it's time for a little Southern Gothic. If you've been watching The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix - based on Shirley Jackson's novel - you'll know the dark-n-tasty treat you're in for with Jackson's last novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle: spooky house, a twisted family, mysterious deaths, and magical protections that may or may not work - just in time for Thanksgiving.

(Please note: we meet after hours, so no 'fraidy cats.)

HOW IT WORKS:

All book clubs require a ticket, and include the book, snacks/bevs, and a dedicated moderator - to keep the discussion on track! All clubs meet at The Last Bookstore.

You can get your ticket (we'll ship the book to you!) at the link on this page - OR just come in to the store and look for our book club display, near the book tunnel. (The on-line option will shut down a week before the event, but that does not mean we are sold out.)

If you choose the on-line option (the one with shipping), please send a mailing addy to larkin.lastbookstore@gmail.com

Note: For our after-hours clubs (The Thing in the Labyrinth and Gothic) we know downtown can be a tad sketchy, so we always leave together. Most folks park in the lots a block north of us.

cover of Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle, featuring a sorta cute but also spooky illustration of the female characters and a cat, surrounded by freaked out villagers
