About José Menor

“Pianistically extraordinary” – Martha Argerich
"Goyescas" CD Editor's Choice in Gramophone
Twice nominated as one of the best CDs of the year (Gramophone, ABC Cultural)

Spanish pianist José Menor, “one of the biggest assets to the piano world” (Ritmo Magazine), has received international praise for being “a beguiling mix of finesse and fire” (The Daily Telegraph), “multifaceted" (Gabriela Montero) and a “revolutionary of his instrument” (Hèctor Parra). His recent solo recital at Carnegie Hall received a standing ovation and was declared “impassioned and eloquent” by New York Classical Review. His latest CD, of Granados’ Goyescas, branded “phenomenal” (The Arts Desk), “fabulous” (BBC Radio 3) and “splendidly presented” (The Sunday Times), was Album of the Week on BBC Radio Scotland, and received five stars in Melomano and Ritmo Magazines. It was released on the IBS Classical label in 2017.

José has taken his “magnificent” (Martha Argerich) performances to international venues including Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square, Carnegie Hall, Auditorio Nacional (Madrid) and Palau de la Musica (Barcelona). Recent highlights include performing Messiaen at the Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano, a live broadcast for Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele (Germany) of Hector Parra's complete works, appearing at the "Meet in Beijing" Arts Festival in China, and collaborating with the great-grandchildren of Enrique Granados in rediscovering previously neglected works. His performances have been broadcast on radio and television, including in America (CNN, WWFM, WXEL), the UK (BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Scotland and Resonance FM), Germany (SWR), Spain (TVE, TV3, RNE, Catalunya Música), as well as in Canada, Australia, Israel and Japan.

José’s performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) of Albéniz’s Concierto Fantástico was highly acclaimed by the international press, and launched premieres across the world. As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with orchestras including the Wuhan Philharmonic (China); Montevideo Philharmonic (Uruguay); Redlands Symphony (USA); Wroclaw and Bydgoszcz Philharmonics (Poland); Sinfónica de Xalapa (México), amongst others; and major Spanish orchestras including RTVE in Madrid; OBC in Barcelona; and Simfònica del Vallès. An avid chamber musician, José has played with artists including Philip Setzer (Emerson Quartet), Ransom Wilson, Dai Miyata, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Peijun Xu and Francisco Fullana.

José is established as a prime interpreter of contemporary piano. He has premiered works by major composers including Hèctor Parra, Sam Hayden and Joan Guinjoan. His two CDs of the complete works by Guinjoan earned him praise as “the great ambassador of Spanish music” (Melómano Magazine). As a composer himself, his output includes orchestral works, chamber music, songs and piano music. In 2017, José was commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical to compose and premiere a piano étude, New Crossroads, wich he then performed live on Spanish national radio.

2018 will find Menor performing Messiaen at the Festival de Arte Sacro (Madrid), Beethoven, Ligeti and his own works on a tour of Spain (promoted by CNDM), Beethoven-Liszt’s Ninth Symphony at La Maestranza (Seville), Hèctor Parra's complete piano works in France (Lille), and Granados' Goyescas at the Klassik Festival Momentum (Germany), amongst many other engagements. The premiere of Parra’s piano concerto is set for 2019. Forthcoming recordings include Parra’s complete piano works for the label Pentatone. Other than music, José 's interests range from new technologies and mathematics to contemporary visual art.
