Description

Gotham Arts is delighted to present a recital by violinist Nuné Melik and pianist Michel-Alexandre Brokaert of music from their new album Hidden Treasure featuring beautiful, passionate, and heartbreaking music from Armenia. Hidden Treasure is the result of several years of research by Melik, a Siberian-born violinist of Armenian and Georgian heritage. Since forming a partnership with Broekaert in 2010, Melik has performed this music for audiences across North America and beyond, and has also delivered numerous lectures, in four languages, about her research. The program has been selected as part of the next national tour of Jeunesses Musicales Canada as well as a tour of China in 2019. Melik calls this very personal album “a celebration of the spirit of survival and the creativity of the Armenian people.”

Tickets required for admission. Please purchase tickets ASAP to facilitate determining headcount for refreshments. Ticket purchase includes a copy of the Hidden Treasures compact disc. Supporters of the Hidden Treasure Kickstarter project will be provided a discount code to purchase free tickets.

About the Hidden Treasure Project

The Hidden Treasure Project is an unprecedented initiative in the history of classical music of the Caucasus. Initiated and produced by internationally acclaimed violinist Nune Melik, it is based on more than 7 years of research.

Three trips to Armenia funded by McGill University and the Canada Council for the Art were undertaken, resulting in the discovery of an impressive array of the rare musical scores and related material. Melik's outstanding contribution has been highlighted in media publications including Strings Magazine, The Huffington Post, Armenian Mirror-Spectator, and various TV programs internationally. Hidden Treasure has been presented in numerous performances to audiences at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and broadcast on CBC Radio.

Striving to educate the North American public about the heritage of her country’s music, Melik has presented numerous lectures at institutions including Columbia University (New York), Arizona State University (Tucson) and Wayne University (Detroit). The program has been selected as part of the national tour of the Jeunesses Musicales Canada and a China tour in 2019.

While enjoying collaboration with several pianists, Nuné formed a duo with University of Montreal alum Michel-Alexandre Broekaert in 2010. Ever since they have performed over sixty concerts across Canada and the United States. In upcoming seasons the ensemble will perform in more than a dozen cities in Canada, the United States, Europe, and China to launch and promote the Hidden Treasure album, recorded in collaboration with Yamaha Artist Services New York and McGill University.
