Session #1-Pre-AP Strategies-Effective Thinking Strategies for All Students:

In this workshop for middle and high school teachers, you will learn research-based strategies to help students activate their background knowledge, deepen their comprehension, and develop an academic vocabulary. This workshop explores the benefits of using cross-curricular strategies to meet the needs of a diverse population of students.

Session #2-Pre-AP Strategies Math -Chance Variation and Probability:

In this workshop, you will use research on the learning of probability and engage in classroom activities that progress through elementary definitions and concepts of probability, culminating in the use of simulation to model probability problems. You will gain significant knowledge about finding and correcting student misinterpretations about these events, and then discover ways to improve student understanding through reflection and communication. You will learn to develop activities for the classroom that help connect the content to events relevant to students and their lives. Specific topics include classical probability; law of large numbers; and probability rules, distributions, and conditions.

Length: 1 day

Learning outcomes

After attending this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Apply teaching strategies that can be used to provide students with the means to analyze chance events, question their understanding of these chance events, and replace faulty concepts with better ones.
  • Show your students that mathematics relates to real-world experiences and does not consist solely of symbols, rules, and conventions.
