Join us in celebrating 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic! This biographical kids book is perfect for readers aged 8 - 13.

About this event

Eventbrite registration is required to attend the event, and masks are required in-store.

Location: Alexander Avenue, between 134th St. and Bruckner Boulevard, in front of The Lit. Bar. The street will be blocked off for this event.

Each paid admission ticket includes one copy of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic and access to this celebration!

11:30 am - 12:00 pm Check-in and secure your seats.

12:00 pm – 12:30 pm Q&A discussion with editors Lilly Workneh and CaShawn Thompson about their book Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls:100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic, and the Black Girl Magic movement. Young guests will be provided with an activity sheet to engage in the discussion.

12:30 pm – 2:30 pm Young attendees can write their own story and have their portrait drawn by one of the artists from Black Girl Magic on a page insert. Attendees will also have time to meet and greet the authors, have their photos taken, and shop merch from the Celebrate Black Girl Magic pop-up shop!

Wells, and many other inspiring leaders, champions, innovators, and creators. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic is the fourth volume of the New York Times bestselling Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series which originally launched in 2016.

About Black Girl Magic

CaShawn Thompson, a proud third-generation native of Washington, DC, came up with the concept "Black Girls Are Magic" when she was a little girl growing up with her mother, grandmother, and aunts. It sprang forth fully formed from the mind of a poor little Black girl who didn't yet have the words to describe the brilliance she saw in the women in her family, but had heard countless tales of fairies, witches, and magicians. It was just magic to her. And it still is.

Black Girls Are Magic became wildly popular in 2013 after CaShawn began using the phrase online (it was later shortened to the hashtag #BlackGirlMagic) to uplift and praise the accomplishments, beauty, and other amazing qualities of Black women.

Lilly Workneh is an award-winning journalist who is passionate about impactful storytelling. She previously led HuffPost’s “Black Voices” and later served as the editor-in-chief at Blavity News, where she directed the platform’s mission to amplify, unpack, and celebrate the many aspects of the Black millennial community. Lilly has since joined Rebel Girls as head of digital content and is a Forbes “30 Under 30” 2018 honoree. She wholeheartedly believes powerful stories can shift perspectives, expand imagination, and deepen understanding, helping to build a better future for all of us.
