Event description
Good Evening | Session 8: A Conversation About Body Love

About this Event

Good Evenings are monthly Man Repeller events that bring our community together to get a behind-the-curtain peek at industries and topics that inspire us from individuals we admire.

Join Man Repeller and Body Politic for a panel discussion on maximalism, body-love, and self-acceptance. We'll be examining how maximalist self-expression connects to self-love, the barriers to expressing oneself maximally while living in a marginalized body, and learning to live without boundaries in all aspects of life - from the workplace to the bedroom, and beyond.

Check out what Body Politic is up to! @bodypoliticnyc

Hors d'oeuvres and beverages (21+) provided. Doors open at 6:30pm so come by and mingle before the 7pm talk begins!

About this month's panelists:

Arabelle Sicardi

Arabelle Sicardi is a beauty writer with bylines in ALLURE, ELLE, SSENSE, teenVOGUE, and others. They specialize in writing about the relationship between beauty, technology, and power. They published a queer children's book called Queer Heroes earlier this year and just sold their debut adult non-fiction book, The House of Beauty, to W. W. Norton.

Brittany Brathwaite, MSW, MPH

Brittany Brathwaite is a reproductive justice activist, youth worker and community accountable scholar with a deep commitment to supporting the leadership, organizing, and healing of girls of color.

Brittany has worked to create change in the lives of girls of color through sexual health education, local base building, advocacy, curriculum development, storytelling strategies and participatory action research. As co-founder of KIMBRITIVE, Brittany supports the vision for creating real, empowering conversations and sexual wellness workshops for Black women and girls. Brittany holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Women’s and Gender Studies and Sociology from Syracuse University and a Master of Public Health and a Master of Social Work from Columbia University.

When she’s not attempting to save the world, you can find her collecting sneakers and statement t-shirts, reading Octavia Butler novels and other works by Black women authors and sipping lemonade from her Brooklyn stoop.

Laura Delarato

Laura Delarato is a writer, creative producer, nude model, body image activist, and sex educator based in Brooklyn, NY . . . she also very aware of how intense that all sounds. Her art and essays have been featured on BeautyCon, Refinery29, Men's Health, Ravishly, People, Allure, NBC, LunaLuna Magazine, Travel + Leisure, and Revelist — and she can be seen modeling for Blink Fitness, Dia & Co, Target, PlusBKYN and Gwynnie Bee. Laura teaches workshops around sexual health, plus-size visibility, confidence, and how to sell to the plus-size consumer. Her work is deeply planted within body politics, fitness, sex education and plus size representation. Follow Laura on Instagram where she posts about body acceptance, erotic art, and wellness.

Sesali Bowen

Sesali Bowen, 31, is the former Senior Entertainment Editor at NYLON and cultural influencer sitting at the intersection of Black feminism, popular culture, and fat girl flyness. With a combined following of over 32k on Instagram and Twitter, she has become a respected voice amongst body and sex positive communities. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Refinery29, Feministing.com, the official websites for Oxygen Network and Viacom, and quite possibly, in your boo’s DMs. She is currently working on her first book, Notes From a Trap Feminist. Sesali was born on the Southside of Chicago and raised by her mother in “the city,” her grandparents in the suburbs, and remotely by female rappers like Trina. According to urban legend, she talked before she could even get up on her stubby legs. "A smart mouth." "Finesse." "The gift of gab." Those are the terms other people have used to describe Sesali’s way with words. She has continued to use this gift to make her own way through the world in a fat, Black, female body.
