Description

Speaker: Daniel I. Block, Gunther H. Knoedler Professor Emeritus of Old Testament, Wheaton College

Lecture Topics

Lecture 1 (January 18) - Corporate Worship: A Weekly Audience with God

By his Holy Spirit, God is present wherever his people are found, and he regularly meets with his people individually. However, to prevent the radical individualization of faith, the LORD has invited us to assemble regularly in his holy presence for an audience with him. A primary function of corporate worship is to unite us in our identity as his covenant people and to shape our views of him, ourselves, and the world through hearing his voice together. But how does the gathered community hear the voice of God? After arguing that worshipers hear God's voice most clearly through the oral reading of Scripture, Dr. Block will examine the role of the Scriptures in worship in ancient Israel and in the early Church, and conclude with reflections on the significance of our fndings for corporate worship today.

Lecture 2 (January 19) - Daily Life as Worship: The Ethical Mission of the People of God

Through corporate worship, God's people are to celebrate their status as his chosen and commisioned agents of grace. Having been reminded that they "bear the LORD's name," with humility and thanksgiving they enter the workaday world as "a holy people belonging to the LORD." The phrase suggests that as a group they belong to God, and that they represent him corporately before a watching world. Accordingly, God calls his people to a common ethic and a common mission. Through their public and private lives, they give hands and feet to the transformation that their encounters with the living God produce, and proclaim "the excellencies of him who has called them out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Pet 2:9).

Both lectures are open to the public and are free of charge. Come and join us for this exciting event! For any questions, please contact Mark Poe at mpoe@gordonconwell.edu or 704-435-6408.
