The Thirty Years’ War, 1618-1648, and What it Reveals about the Fundamental Patterns of Human History

This presentation will explore the complicated causes and destructive nature of the Thirty Years’ War, 1618-1648. It will explain why this prolonged struggle engulfed much of the European continent and how its fury advanced European military organization as well as the methods by which wars were fought. Finally, it will consider the consequences of this far-ranging upheaval, notably the formation of a continental state system grounded in a balance of power that continued to evolve until the outbreak of World War One.
