Event description

Description

The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair (GNCCF) is celebrating its tenth year by teaming up with OH OK LTD to stage GNCCF LIVE. Over the weekend of 28-30 July eight designer-makers, who will be exhibiting at the GNCCF in October, will set up pop up studios in PLANT NOMA, a new workshop space situated opposite The Pilcrow Pub in city centre Manchester.

The makers involved are; textile designer Lydia Cotterell, ceramicists Chris Turrell Watts and Victoria Dawes, glass engraver Heather Gillespie, jewellers Rosie Deegan, Jo Lavelle and Lauren Taylor, and leatherworker Catherine Edwards.

The space will be open from 10.00am to 6.00pm when makers will demonstrate working on pieces for the GNCCF and will chat to visitors about their craft. Between 1pm and 3pm the makers will then host free drop-in workshops where visitors can have a go at making, using a variety of materials and techniques such as screen-printing, hand-building ceramic pieces, glass engraving, jewellery making and more.

Friday 28 July

Potter Victoria Dawes will be demonstrating her throwing and the technique of scraffito to decorate her vessels. Visitors will be able to try their hand at decorating their own pot in her workshop.

Textile designer Lydia Cotterell of Lydia Mary will be designing and screen-printing cloth. In her workshop visitors will be able to design and screen-print their own tea towel.

Saturday 29 July

Rosie Deegan, who practises as an artist-jeweller will be hand-piercing intricate designs on metal plate. Rosie is certainly one to watch – her entire degree show collection was snapped up by an eminent collector. Visitors will be able to have a go making their own decorative metal plate in her afternoon workshop.

Chris Turrell-Watts – this Merseyside maker will be making his quirky clay characters and give visitors the chance to create their own in his workshop.

Catherine Edwards – will be making leather bags in her pop up studio. She’ll show visitors how to work with her special tool kit to make a personalised key ring with hand embossed initials.

Sunday 30 July

Manchester based jeweller Jo Lavelle will be working in silver to create her signature pieces and she’ll be guiding visitors through the process of making a ring in her two-hour workshop.

Joining her is another jeweller Lauren Taylor from Marple, who works with thread to create colourful statement pieces. She’ll show visitors how to create their own bangle or necklace using a similar technique used in rope making during her drop-in workshop.

And finally, Heather Gillespie from Cumbria, will be demonstrating the art of glass engraving. She is one of the few who still use the traditional art of copper wheel engraving. During her workshop, visitors will be able to engrave their own designs on a jam jar to make their own tea light holders.

GNCCF Live at PLANT is free to attend and everyone is welcome!
