Event description

Description

GLSEN of Greater Kansas City is hosting a Professional Development Workshop to equip educators with the knowledge and skills they need to be allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.

This day-long workshop will include real-life scenarios portraying situations in schools to which the training will help participants respond. In the elementary track, these scenarios include transgender and gender non-conforming elementary youth, along with children from LGBT families. A continental breakfast and lunch is provided with the registration fee.

Two tracks are offered: Elementary and Secondary. Once you register, email Lora Ackerman to indicate for which track you are signing up.

Participants of the workshop will leave the training able to:

  • Describe the environment for LGBTQ+ youth in schools;
  • Intervene when they witness anti-LGBTQ+ bullying, harssment, and marginalization;
  • Understand and be able to support transgender and gender non-conforming youth, including those who are transitioning in elementary grades; and,
  • Advocate for LGBTQ+ youth to ensure their schools are a safe place.

This training is underwritten by a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation. The Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) is a philanthropy dedicated to improving the health of all Kansans. For more information about the Kansas Health Foundation, visit www.kansashealth.org. .
