May 10th - 11th, 2019: 2-day conference

Title: Beyond #MeToo: A Look at Gender Based Violence and Reproductive Coercion Globally

May 13th – 17th, 2019: 5-day workshop

Title: Designing and Evaluating Culturally Appropriate Interventions to Improve Reproductive & Sexual Health


Offered by the University of Michigan School of Nursing, with faculty from across the health sciences, this second annual UMSN Summer Institute is designed to help participants gain a broad insight into contemporary issues in reproductive and sexual health. This short, intensive course will allow participants to gain the skills and knowledge to advance their inquiry in global reproductive and sexual health through a two-day conference followed by a five-day workshop. Participants may choose to attend to the two-day conference only, or both the conference and the workshop.


2-day Conference

The two-day conference will focus on reproductive coercion, human trafficking, and gender-based violence with experts in the field presenting up-to-date research and practical clinical approaches to working with vulnerable populations.

Objectives:

  • Describe the different forms of gender-based violence
  • Describe reproductive coercion and how it is linked to gender-based violence
  • Describe how reproductive coercion is measured
  • Identify the consequences of reproductive coercion
  • Discuss programs and interventions for reducing reproductive coercion
  • Identify the types and venues of human trafficking around the world
  • Explore screening questions and tools that might be useful to identify victims of human trafficking
  • Discuss models for educating healthcare providers about gender based violence
  • Describe the neurobiology of trauma
  • Discuss potential prevention programs for gender-based violence and human trafficking


5-day Workshop

Building on the content from the 2-day conference, this 5-day workshop will give participants an opportunity to develop beginning competencies in the design and evaluation of culturally and developmentally appropriate interventions to improve reproductive and sexual health across a multitude of settings.

Objectives

  • Understand how to design impactful studies
  • Discuss different measurement aspects of a study
  • Understand the steps that are required when designing quantitative research studies
  • Describe the differences in quantitative research designs
  • Understand and articulate issues of reliability and validity
  • Explore the ethical issues associated with a range of research designs
  • Describe how to connect program objectives to key monitoring tasks
  • Develop a program monitoring plan with key essential components


Target Audience

The University of Michigan School of Nursing Summer Institute in Global Reproductive and Sexual Health is intended, but not limited to: nurses, midwives, social workers, physicians, junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, researchers or investigators, the ministry of health personnel, non-governmental organization monitoring and evaluation staff, and others with an interest in global reproductive and sexual health research.
