Description

Global Ready Network 2018 with Cassandra Erkens
Developing Assessment Literacy: The Backbone of Instructional Agility

This series of 4 sessions is intended to explore what it means to be assessment literate from the lens of a framework that encompasses the assessment vision, the classroom culture, and 6 critical assessment tenets (practices grounded in non-negotiable truths) required to guide educators of all walks (teachers and administrators) in making powerful, accurate, moment by moment, responsive decisions. Underpinned by current, international, best practice research, the Assessment Literacy Framework (outlined in the book Essential Assessment by Erkens, Schimmer, and Vagle, 2016), is geared to help learners of all ages get to deep learning.

The series is set up to be action research-oriented, with tasks to be completed between sessions and evidence / results to be brought back for review and discussion in future sessions. Session will be set up to engage learners in meaningful discussions / collaborative exploration. In addition, each session will provide practical take away strategies or tools that can be used immediately to support the development of assessment literacy in a learning by doing fashion.

Session 1: The Assessment Literacy Framework – This session explores the big picture of the framework and highlights the importance as well as the interconnectedness of each key idea. The session will be used to explore how current assessment practices in traditional settings might be prohibiting the work of true learning from student to teacher to administrator alike. In this session, special attention will be paid to the assessment vision and classroom culture needed to guide all of the discussions and practices outlined in the upcoming sessions.

Session 2: Assessment Architecture – This session explores the logistics of assessment purposes and design features. Topics in this session include unpacking standards for the assessment design implications, developing road maps and architectural blue prints to support critical design features, processes for vetting assessments, and designing for an increase in rigor and relevance in all assessment work. This session will focus on both the rationale for and the processes of developing assessment architecture as a pre-cursor to precise and flexible instructional decision making.

Session 3: Instructional Agility – This session offers specific formative practices that teachers and administrators can use to cultivate meaningful information for quality decision making. The session focuses on diagnosing learning through the lens of error analysis. In addition, attention will be paid to accurate interpretations of evidence and powerful communication strategies to support student learning. Practices outlined in session 3 should prepare the way empowering learners to invest in their own outcomes.

Session 4: Student Investment – The final session is aimed at the beliefs, strategies, protocols, and cultural requirements necessary to support learners in becoming invested and informed instructional decision makers. This session intended to bring the entire series full circle, connecting all of the assessment tenets.
