Over the 2012/2013 Fall and Winter Sessions the Global Health Division at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health will be hosting a new monthly lunch hour lecture series exploring the intersection between global health and non-communicable diseases. Invited to speak are leading experts from across the University of Toronto to inform, engage and inspire on topics ranging from the governance and economics of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to emergency settings and NCDs. NCDs, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, are now the leading cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization, they impact both high income and low-to-middle income countries, killing up to 36 million people every year.  Up to 80% of all of these deaths, many of which are preventable through basic interventions such as improved diet and regular exercise, occur in low-to-middle income countries. In some low-to-middle income countries, the result has been a costly double burden of disease (infectious and chronic disease burdens), further exasperating development efforts.

SERIES IS DEVELOPED BY Abdallah Daar,  Professor of Public Health Sciences and Surgery, University of Toronto, Senior Scientist and Director of Ethics and Commercialization, Sandra Rotman Centre / University Health Network, Chief Science and Ethics Officer and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board, Grand Challenges Canada; Billie-Jo Hardy, Social Scientist, Ethical, Social and Cultural Program for Global Health,
Sandra Rotman Centre and Judy Kopelow, Director, Strategic Initiatives, Global Health Division, Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
