Event description

Our student tickets for aspiring speakers are sold out, and we will not be able to accommodate more guests due to space limitations. However, we're still recruiting experienced speakers to serve as mentors during the event, sharing their experiences by facilitating small group discussions. (Please register here as a mentor if you're interested.)

Regardless of whether you're able to attend Global Diversity CFP Day on March 2, we encourage you to join our community on Meetup for continued discussions throughout the year.

On Saturday 2nd March 2019 there will be numerous workshops hosted around the globe encouraging and advising newbie speakers from marginalized groups and groups underrepresented groups to put together their very first talk proposals and share their own individual perspective on any subject of interest to people in tech.

Each workshop will have experienced speakers on hand to:

  1. give you a warm, inclusive welcome in a safe space (check out our Code of Conduct which all participants must adhere to)
  2. mentor you with your proposal
  3. provide speaking advice
  4. and share their enthusiasm to get you to the stage!

These workshops have no specific language, framework or process as a focus. Even if your talk isn’t related to tech, we want to hear from you too! In short, if there is something that you want to shout to the world we're here to help you get there regardless of the boundaries of technology or communities.

We're looking for both students (people who have never spoken at a conference before) and mentors (people who have been involved with public speaking and want to help lead discussions for students to learn how to get involved). If you're not quite sure where you fall, feel free to contact the organizers.

This is a FREE workshop, lunch will be provided, and we're looking forward to seeing you! Of course, if you have any questions about the event, do let us know!

We'll be sharing an event agenda one we finalize our session plans and emailing all participants about security and check-in procedures a few days before the event. Stay tuned for more details!

The day consists of a mix of presentations and small-group discussions on topics such as writing abstracts, submitting to Calls for Proposal, crafting great slide decks, overcoming stage fright and imposter syndrome, and more. Lunch will be provided and we're pursuing sponsorship for breakfast and breaks. (Please note any dietary restrictions in the "Support" section of your registraton form and we'll do our best to accommodate.)

We'll add more detail here as plans are confirmed and will send you an email with the agenda, as well as any security and check-in details you need, before the event.

The organizers and mentors for our workshop are experienced speakers who are excited to lead discussions and share their personal experiences. You can learn more about our event organizers and mentors here. (More bios coming soon!)

Transportation and Parking

We recommend taking the T! The Google Cambridge Office is a short walk from the Kendall station on the Red Line of the MBTA.

Although street parking and numerous paid garages are available in the area, we do not currently have any free parking available for this event.

If you'd like to attend but the cost of transportation (MBTA or parking) would be burdensome for you, please make a note in the "Support" section of your registration form and let us know where you'll be traveling from and what financial support would be needed. We'll make every effort to find a corporate or individual sponsor who can help you out.

Dietary Restrictions

We'll be serving lunch at the event. If you have allergies or strict dietary restrictions that we should be aware of, please make a note in the "Support" section of your registration form so that we can do our best to accommodate.

We are still exploring the possibility of providing on-site childcare with the support of a sponsor, but it appears unlikely due to licensure and insurance requirements. If having childcare would make it possible for you to attend, please make a note in the "Support" section of your registration form and share the age(s) of your child(ren) so that we can keep you updated as we determine whether we're able to provide this support.

Our workshop venue is accessible to wheelchair users, has an elevator, and has gender neutral bathrooms. For more information on accessibility, please review the detailed information here, which we're updating as we receive more detail from our hosts. If you have specific questions or there's something we could do to create a better experience for you, please let us know by adding a note to the "Support" section of your application.
