Event description

Description

Are you a member of an underrepresented group?

Have you always wanted to become a tech conference speaker?

Let 2019 be the year that you make that dream a reality!

Global Diversity CFP (Call for Proposals) Day is a free workshop aimed to support people from underrepresented groups within the technology sector by helping them put together their first conference talk proposal. Over 80 workshops all over the world will take place on 2nd March 2019, and we are taking it to Belfast for the first time thanks to Allstate Northern Ireland and Liberty IT!

With experienced mentors on the day as well as advice videos, you will be working in small groups of 2-5 through various stages of preparing a conference talk proposal:

  • Figuring out what topic to speak about
  • Crafting your speaker bio
  • Drafting your talk proposal

You will also hear from local speakers about their experience giving talks at tech conferences and have the opportunity to ask them questions.

By the end of the workshop, you will have a proposal ready to submit to conferences, the skills to prepare new ones in the future, and the inspiration to come up on stage and share your knowledge!

Please arrive from 10:00am for a 10:30am start. Feel free to bring your own laptop or notebook as you will be working on your talk proposal throughout the day. Breakfast will be provided courtesy of Liberty IT, lunch and refreshments will be provided courtesy of Allstate NI. Please advise us of any dietary requirements when you sign up.

The workshop schedule will be released in due course. Please check your email for updates.

By signing up, you agree to the GDCFP Day Code of Conduct.

This workshop is organised by Desy Kristianti, Dan Callahan and Rachel Connor. Thanks to Allstate NI and Liberty IT for sponsoring this event.

FAQs

Who can attend the workshop?

Everyone! The workshop aims to increase all aspects of diversity in conference speaking. You do not need to have any prior speaking experience, or specific amount of experience in the tech industry. We welcome people from all roles including students, developers, designers, managers, entrepreneurs, and more regardless of background.

We want this to be a safe environment. Any form of harassment will not be tolerated, and we expect all attendees to follow our code of conduct at https://www.globaldiversitycfpday.com/code-of-conduct.

Do I need to come with a talk idea?

If you have any initial talk ideas, that's great! Otherwise, there will be a session that helps you brainstorm a few potential ideas. You will also be working in small groups of 2-5 people, so you get to hear other people's ideas which hopefully will inspire you to find yours.

Can I become a mentor at this workshop?

Of course! We are looking for mentors who can share some advice and guide the participants. Even though you are not expected to be an expert at public speaking, it would be helpful if mentors have some experience either speaking at tech conferences/meetups or judging talk proposals. Please get in touch if you would like to sign up as a mentor. Note that you do not necessarily have to be from an underrepresented group to become a mentor.

I am unable to stay for the whole duration of the workshop, can I still come?

You will get the maximum benefit if you stay throughout the whole workshop, but please feel free to leave early if needs be. Links to advice videos will be shared after the event.

Is the venue wheelchair-accessible?

Yes, it is.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Allstate NI is located just a 2-min walk from Belfast Lanyon Place train station. Please take the back stairs or elevator down from the station and the building is just round the corner. You can also take buses or the glider. The nearest parking space is the Hilton Car Park at £14 for up to 6 hours.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please feel free to drop Desy Kristianti an email at dessskris@gmail.com or reach Dan Callahan at @callahad on Twitter.
