Event description

Description

Calling all international students!

The Global Debate Forum and the Barkley Forum for Debate, Deliberation, and Dialogue at Emory University is pleased to invite you to participate in its fifth annual intercollegiate Global Debate Tournament for undergraduate and graduate international students in the Southeast. Absolutely no debate experience is required – we welcome everyone to participate!

What is the Global Debate Tournament and Who is it For?

In response to the growing interest in debate from students around the world, the Barkley Forum at Emory University started the GDT to engage the international community of Georgia in intentional debate. The GDT is a very informal and casual event; most participants have little or no experience so it is a perfect event for students looking to improve their public speaking skills. For international students that do not speak English as their first language, the GDT is a safe and welcoming environment for students to practice the art of debate.

You'll have the opportunity to spend time with fellow international students in a fun and engaging way which is why we ask all attendees to participate and not just be an observer. Debates will be performed over several rounds and you can either come with a debate partner or be assigned one upon arrival.

Who are We?

The Barkley Forum for Debate, Deliberation, and Dialogue, home of Emory's nationally-ranked collegiate policy debate team that has won over 100 national awards, uses deliberation to teach effective modes of communication. Through competitive debate and public opportunities for dialogue, they seek to aid in the holistic development of students, helping them to become leaders who change the world for the better.

Research materials, a continental breakfast, lunch, and prizes will be provided as a part of the registration fee. Transportation is not provided. Further details, directions, and debate topics will be sent via email after the deadline. All questions can be directed to Rick Huizinga, Program Coordinator for International Student Life, at rick.huizinga@emory.edu.

The deadline for registration is February 10th.
