Event description

Description

This event is part of a distributed global event called “Global Azure Bootcamp Day”. On April 27th, 2019, approximately 250 events like this will be held all around the world. The purpose is to share knowledge of the Azure ecosystem, meet peers currently using or interested in Azure, and hear from experts on what is new and exciting within the Azure platform.

Is this event for me?

This year's event will be presented a bit differently from other for "session" focused events we've ran in the past. This year we will kick-off the event with some opening thoughts, and then break into a number of moderated "hands on labs". Attendees can decide which lab to attend and each lab will kick-off with a presentation and "whiteboard" session describing the problem and the solution to be built during the session. At the completion of that, attendees will be assisted in working through their labs individually. Step-by-step instructions will be provided and mentors will be available for any assistance necessary. This is your chance to get your hands dirty actually building applications for Azure or configuring robust Azure development environments (depending on the lab). We will be distributing a document of prerequisite software to all registered attendees prior to the event. Attendees will need their own Azure tenant to utilize for the labs (instructions for this will be provided as well). It’s required that you bring your own laptop to participate in hands-on labs.

Great, but a whole day?! On a Saturday? I understand, giving up a whole Saturday is precious (it is for me too), but I hope you can spend the day with us. Even if you are only able to attend part of the day, that’s OK. An agenda will be distributed soon. Food, snacks and coffee/drinks will be provided.

What labs will be offered?

What kind of labs can you expect? We currently plan on to offer the three labs described below. If the labs provided aren't exactly a fit with what you are looking for we will have other options available onsite if you'd like to branch out and be different. If you do not have the time to complete the lab during the event (or cannot stay the entire time) you are welcome to take the materials with you and complete later.

Legacy App Modernization into Azure

In this workshop, you will gain a better understanding on the steps involved in modernizing legacy on-premises applications and infrastructure by leveraging cloud services, while adding a mix of web and mobile services, all secured using Azure Active Directory.

At the end of this workshop, you will be better able to design a modernization plan for organizations looking to move services from on-premises to the cloud.

Audience:

  • Application Developer

Technologies:

  • Xamarin
  • Web APIs
  • PowerApps
  • Flow
  • Azure Storage
  • Azure Search
  • Azure Redis
  • Azure SQL Database
  • Azure Active Directory
  • API Management

Continuous Delivery and DevOps

In this workshop, you will learn how to setup and configure continuous delivery within Azure using a combination of Azure Resource Manager templates and Azure DevOps. You will do this throughout the use of a new Azure DevOps project, Git repository for source control, and an Azure Resource Manager template for Azure resource deployment and configuration management.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to build templates to automate cloud infrastructure and reduce error-prone manual processes. In addition, you'll create an Azure Resource Manager (ARM) template to provision Azure resources, configure continuous delivery with Azure DevOps, configure Application Insights into an application, and create an Azure DevOps project and Git repository.

Audience:

  • Application Developer

Technologies:

  • Azure App Service
  • Azure SQL Database
  • Application Insights
  • Azure Resource Manager
  • Azure DevOps

Containers and DevOps

In this workshop, you will build a proof of concept (POC) that will transform an existing PaaS application to a container-based application. This POC will deliver a multi-tenant web app hosting solution leveraging Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Docker containers on Linux nodes, and a migration from MongoDB to CosmosDB.

At the end of this workshop, you will be better able to improve the reliability of and increase the release cadence of your container-based applications through time-tested DevOps practices.

Audience:

  • Application Developer
  • Infrastructure architect

Technologies:

  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
  • Azure Container Registry
  • Azure DevOps
  • Docker
  • Cosmos DB (including MongoDB API)

Content will be provided for each lab so you will get the opportunity to spend your day actually moving forward on labs and not hand-coding solutions from scratch. Whether you are a beginner or an expert this is a great opportunity to come engage with the local Azure community and either work through a great lab yourself or share your knowledge and help others.

Where is this event?

This year’s event will be held at the St. Louis Community College’s Corporate Campus in Bridgeton, Missouri. They have some great facilities which will allow us to provide multiple tracts of content simultaneously. Parking is free and there should be plenty. The address and a map are included on this page. The location is near the intersection of I-270 and I-70 and at GPS or other mapping app should get you right there easily.

What should I bring into the event? It’s required to bring your own laptop to participate in hands-on labs. If you have any specific dietary needs, bringing your own food is recommended.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
