Event description

Description

We have glider flying opportunities on Spetember 14, 2019. Our squadron has 6 slots available for orientation flights to be conducted at Springfield Vermont. There are only 3 slots are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Fly days for gliders are a little different that for powered O-Flights. Usually during the powered flights, those cadets who are not flying are usually in a terminal or FBO while waiting their turn to fly. In glider operations this in not the case. The cadets and the Senior Members will be waiting at the staging area, outdoors and hopefully in the bright sunshine. A couple of items to be aware of:

  • We are on the field typically for about four hours at a time (Block A, Block B).
  • There are not any benches or chairs to sit on, so if you want to sit, it is on folding chairs that you bring or on the ground. There are some folding chairs but it is limited.
  • It is required that flight ops personnel (including cadets) wear bright safety vest for visibility. We will bring safety vests.
  • There is a portable canopy for sunshade but a good part of the day the cadets are on the flightline/runway so sunblock/wide brimmed hats and water are imperative.
  • Uniform of the Day: Cadets are authorized to wear a CAP t-shirt with shorts and sneakers or ABU/BDU, with sneakers. Senior Members, please wear corporate polo.
  • There is a deli 1/4 mile down the road for lunch, if you have driven a private vehicle, but we recommend you bring your own bagged lunch. There is not any food available at the airport.

Transportation will be from Pease via CAP van at 10:15AM, returning at approximately 20:00.

Cadets must have completed the "Aircraft Ground Handling" and "Wing Runners Course" before signing up for a glider flight. This training may be found on eServices under Online Learning or by using the following links:

Aircraft Ground Handling: https://www.capnhq.gov/CAP.LMS.Web/Course/course_start.aspx?c=32

Wing Runners Course: http://www.soaringsafety.org/learning/wingrunner/wingrunner.html

Cadets should bring the following items with them :

  • Form 32
  • Sneakers
  • Hydration
  • CapID card
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Bag lunch - refrigeration/microwaves are NOT available
Cadets will call home when we are leaving the airport with estimated time of return.
