Event description

Description

View the museum interiors, enjoy refreshments on the lawn, and hear remarks by historian Hasan Kwame Jeffries about his work with "Teaching Hard History: American Slavery," an educational initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance Project.

Dr. Jeffries, associate professor of history at the Ohio State University and author of Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama's Black Belt, chairs the advisory committee for the Teaching Tolerance project and hosts the "Teaching Hard History" podcast. This initiativebased on survey findings that American students lack a basic knowledge of the important role slavery played in shaping our nation and the impact it continues to have on race relations in Americaincludes a comprehensive free guide for teaching and learning this critical topic at the middle and high school levels.

In his preface to the project's new report on the broad failure of textbooks, state standards, and pedagogy to adequately address this critical topic with students, Professor Jeffries writes, "Understanding American slavery is vital to understanding racial inequality today. The formal and informal barriers to equal rights erected after emancipation, which defined the parameters of the color line for more than a century, were built on a foundation constructed during slavery. Our narrow understanding of the institution, however, prevents us from seeing this long legacy and leads policymakers to try and fix people instead of addressing the historically rooted causes of their problems."

Special Opportunity: Teacher Workshop with Professor Jeffries - 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
We're excited to announce that Dr. Jeffries will be joined by Dr. Bethany Jay, associate professor of history at Salem State University, to lead a hands-on workshop on teaching American slavery for classroom teachers immediately prior to Giving Voice.

This two-hour workshop on our site will include classroom-ready resources linked to the new Massachusetts social studies frameworks, and ample opportunity for Q&A. Box lunch will be provided, and participating teachers are encouraged to stay for Giving Voice that afternoon.

Professor Bethany Jay is co-editor of Understanding and Teaching American Slavery, on which the key concepts of Teaching Hard History's framework for teaching American slavery are based.

Workshop + complimentary Giving Voice tickets are $20 for K-12 teachers.
