Event description

Description

You are invited to join Donor Network West and the African American Museum and Library at Oakland for the opening reception of the groundbreaking photography/multimedia exhibit: Giving Me Life: A Visual Journey of African American Organ and Tissue Transplant Recipients.

Through a series of stunning black and white portraits taken by Bay Area social documentary photographer, Katie Sugarman, this exhibit affirms that indeed, #BlackLivesMatter/ #BLM.

On view from June 9th - June 30th, the Giving Me Life exhibit powerfully depicts the visual testimonials of nine African American Bay Area transplant recipients, who have overcome incredible obstacles in their respective journeys toward health, wellness and living their best lives—all thanks to the gift of organ, eye, and tissue donation. The exhibit also serves as a vital catalyst for dialogue and advocacy, as the need for more registered African American organ and tissue donors is great--not just here in the Bay Area, but across the U.S.

PROGRAM:

2:00pm – 2:30pm: Mix and Mingle

2:30pm – 3:15 pm: Panel Discussion: "In Focus: Cultural and Clinical Considerations for African Americans and their Donate Life Experience," featuring special guest: Dr. Beau Kelly MD, MBA, FACS, Surgical Director, DCI Donor Services, Inc.

3:15 pm – 4:00 pm: Reception with light refreshments / Self-Guided Tours

About Katie Sugarman

Katie Sugarman has an intimate appreciation for the Gift of Life made possible through organ and tissue donation. Fifteen years ago, her mother, Roz, received a life-saving heart transplant. Roz is now healthy, thriving, and enjoying life to the fullest. One of her greatest pleasures is the ability to take deep breaths. Sugarman is an avid traveler who lends her time and talent to a non-profit that focuses on empowering Maasai girls and women though education and other projects. She believes in the power of photography to share important stories and empower others in the process.
