Event Details

The city of San Francisco’s waterfront stands at a critical juncture. With its vulnerability to earthquakes and rising seas, a cohesive, efficient and adaptive redevelopment has never been more urgent. Significant progress has been made with the Port of SF’s Waterfront Plan and the overwhelming support for the 2018 Seawall bond measure.

Still, competing local interests and lack of funding for major infrastructure upgrades have slowed development and public realm improvements to a near halt. Bay Area residents are left to peer in from the outside, imagining what these shoreline spaces could be if only jurisdictional powers and communities on the waterfront could unlock the possibilities of discovery, experimentation, and innovation -- the very things San Franciscans are good at.

To create a more resilient future for our waterfront, we need to embrace a more creative and flexible approach to historic preservation and the development process. This panel will investigate what it takes. We will bring together various stakeholders – historians, urban planners, municipalities, creative thinkers, and entrepreneurs – to discuss the frameworks that enable development to achieve visionary goals while remaining adaptable over time. We will assess tools, tactics and innovations in civic engagement which might advance more participatory connections between community and place.
