According to ancient Chinese philosophy, to exist is to be in relationship. In Rinzai Zen, which originated in China, giving away one’s self completely to that with which one is in relationship is self-realization. This is also called “seeing one’s original face” or, as one Zen Master put it, “manifesting True Love”. What does this mean in our contemporary lives? More importantly, how does one’s “original face” or one’s nature as “True Love” actually manifest in our relationships with other people and the world around us?

In this workshop, participants examine moments of self-realization as they occur in our most important relationships with a focus specifically on relationships between spiritual teachers and students as well as between therapists and clients. How are these two kinds of relationship different? Can a moment of self-realization occur in both kinds of relationship? How is such a moment experienced and how does it transform one’s self-experience? This workshop offers an exploration of these questions through stories, case vignettes, and experiential exercises.
