Event description

Description

Special Session on GIS Technology in Coastal Natural Hazards - CoNatHaz 2019

3 - 5 May, 2019 - Heraklion, Crete, Greece

Within the 5th International Conference on Geographical Information Systems Theory, Applications and Management - GISTAM 2019

SCOPE

The Mediterranean Sea coastal regions have suffered numerous catastrophic events from destructive earthquakes and tsunamis triggered by earthquakes or large landslides . Currently, geohazard studies are of great importance in the European research or inter-regional funded projects. Geographic Information Systems will improve security by mapping hazards that affect coastal areas, both of continental, characterized by a continued economic growth due to the presence of touristic activities on beaches and off-shore areas (in shallow waters where ecosystems and economic activities are established). Modelling and visualizing of the damage distribution (scenarios of damage) and inundation (tsunami waves), it is provided an effective simulation in order to produce a comprehensive hazard zoning of the surrounding regions. These elements will be of high values through the coastal territories planning and the designing of intervention plans on economic interest sites of high vulnerability.

The main topics include but are not limited to:
- GIS for mapping active fault zones-coastal landslides-Hazard Zoning Maps;
- GIS for tsunami inundation Maps-Tsuanami management plans 3D visualizations of Coastal Geohazards for public engagement, educational and training purposes.

Brief Bio
Varvara Antoniou is parto of the Educational Research Staff of Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She received a PhD in Geosciences from Agricultural University of Athens and a MSc in Prevention and Management of Natural Disasters from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She specializes in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and has participated in many research projects and in one oceanographic cruise with Nautilus in the area of Santorini island.

SCOPE

The International Conference on Geographical Information Systems Theory, Applications and Management aims at creating a meeting point of researchers and practitioners that address new challenges in geo-spatial data sensing, observation, representation, processing, visualization, sharing and managing, in all aspects concerning both information communication and technologies (ICT) as well as management information systems and knowledge-based systems. The conference welcomes original papers of either practical or theoretical nature, presenting research or applications, of specialized or interdisciplinary nature, addressing any aspect of geographic information systems and technologies.
