Event description

Description

This Workshop is Proudly Hosted by BayGeo and the University of San Francisco's Geospatial Analysis Lab

Learning Objectives

GIS QuickStart is designed as an introductory and refresher tutorial. It consists of four (4) class meetings that will introduce/reintroduce students to basic GIS tools/techniques, familiarize them with a suite of GIS tasks and spark their interest in GIS. The objective is to equip students with basic skills to prepare them for success in the GIS industry.

Previous workshop enrollees have tended to be “non-traditional students”, in the sense that they are either recent graduates or are currently in the workforce. Such students take courses like GIS QuickStart to build skills and enhance their career opportunities. Several students have expressed interest in transitioning to GIS-related careers.

The GIS QuickStart workshop's objective in not merely to cover a few topics but to be comprehensive. For instance, students will learn how to create maps, work with vector and raster data, create shapefiles and geodatabases, manipulate tables, convert coordinates to different geographic and projection systems, use geoprocessing tools, and measure distances.

Students will gain confidence in these fundamentals through various exercises and assignments. Using Esri's ArcGIS Desktop 10, students will be exposed to the most powerful and industry-standard desktop GIS software package.
