GIS Day 2019 - In the Shadows of Notre Dame
Event Information
Description
The fire that whipped through the great Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, in April of 2019, stunned people the world over. Like the archaeological sites in the Middle East that have recently disappeared because of terrorism and war, this iconic symbol of cultural heritage reminded us of both our shared humanity and our mortality.
Today the combined technologies of digital mapping, laser imaging and computer vision, while not able to bring back what has been lost to the ravages of time and disaster can, at least, give us hope that some of what these architectural wonders meant to the world can be restored. This conference, which celebrates Geographic Information Sciences Day 2019, brings together speakers from across the technological spectrum to talk about how these technologies are employed in cultural heritage preservation and why their systematic application is so important to maintain our shared historical past.
