Hosted by the Young Women’s Advisory Council of the Young Women’s Initiative at the Washington Area Women’s Foundation, the Summit will be an opportunity for girls between the ages of 12-24 residing in the District of Columbia to learn, connect, gain valuable skills and lift their voices on the issues that are important to them and impact their communities and neighborhoods.

At the Summit, girls will have the opportunity to hear from trailblazing leaders like Elaine Welteroth, Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue, who will open the summit and many other young people that are doing extraordinary things to make change and a difference across the country.

The GirlsLEAD Summit is in partnership with the University of the District of Columbia.

The Summit is sponsored by the NoVo Foundation and the Coca-Cola Foundation.


FAQs

Q. Who can attend the GirlsLEAD Summit?

The GirlsLEAD Summit is open to young women and girls of color, gender non-conforming youth, and transgender girls between the ages of 12-24 that reside in the District of Columbia.

Q. Do I have to be enrolled in a DC Public or Charter school to attend the Summit?

No, you do not have to be enrolled in a DC Public or Charter school to attend the Summit. Our only requirement is that you reside in the District.

Q. Can you work with my school so that I can be excused to attend the conference?

Absolutely! We can provide a letter to your school, parents, guardians or teachers about the conference and its benefits to your educational experience.

Q. What is the cost to attend the GirlsLEAD Summit?

The Summit is free, but space is limited to 250 young people.

Q. What about transportation?

The Summit will be held at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) at the Student Center. The University is metro accessible. Local transportation scholarships are also available.

Q. What should I wear?

Whatever makes you feel like you! What’s important is that you are comfortable.

Q. Can I present a workshop at the Summit?

Sure thing! Grab 2 or 3 of your closest friends and submit a workshop proposal on any topic that you’d like. You don’t have to have previous experience presenting a workshop—just an eagerness to share your knowledge and experience with other girls. You can present on street harassment or violence; homelessness and affordable housing for young people; education, STEM, or health; or social media.

Q. Do I need to bring my own lunch or money to purchase meals?

No. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided for all young people, adult mentors, and practitioners registered for the conference.
