GirlsInTek Summer Enrichment Program: an Imagineering Workshop for Middle School Girls

GirlsInTek in collaboration with SRVEF is excited to bring to the SRVUSD community a revolutionary summer enrichment program for incoming 6th, 7th and 8th grade middle school girls. This award winning* program will provide unique exposure to exploring technology in an environment where girls are empowered to learn leadership skills and coding skills and will create a project in one week based on the skills they learn throughout the week. Girls enrolled in this program will be mentored by Aashima Gupta and Madhu Nutakki, the founders of this program who created the curriculum designed specifically for middle school girls. This program was piloted in the spring at Windemere Ranch Middle School and will follow a set defined curriculum outlined below. High School students will also serve as mentors for these girls to give them a small ratio in the classroom. Their goal is to empower girls to take computer classes in middle and high school and remain receptive to STEM education with the goal of choosing a technology or engineering career when they graduate.
Each of the sessions will follow a set defined curriculum
(1) Technology Elements
- Fundamentals of Computer Science and engineering
- Skills based learning with Hands On Lab(HTML5,Java Script, Game Design and Prototyping)
- Critical thinking and problem solving
(2) Girls Empowerment and Leadership Elements:
- Group Discussions, Mentorship, and Coaching
- Ignite Speaker Series “Light a Spark”
- Presentation, Public Speaking
There will be a $25 materials fee payable on the first day of the class.
*Girls from the Inagural GirlsinTek class won third place in the mobile app category at Hackathon sponsored by Alameda County.
Patron-requested refunds will be approved only if requested in writing no later than 7 days prior to the first day of the class/program. Credits will be issued minus a $25 processing fee only if the class remains above the minimum attendence required to hold the class.
