Join Girls in Tech Los Angeles for our first professional development panel of 2019, bringing you a discussion of virtual and augmented realities.

Enjoy an evening of networking and light snacks with fellow women in tech and aspiring women (and allies) in tech at the office of AR/VR startup Within. Following a moderated panel that will cover career journeys and industry challenges, the discussion will be opened up to questions from the audience, before the event concludes with a final round of networking.

Confirmed panelists include:

  • Nonny de la Peña, CEO & Founder of award-winning innovation company Emblematic Group. Often acknowledged as “The Godmother of Virtual Reality,” she is a pioneer of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality who is widely credited with inventing the genre of immersive journalism. In 2012, her piece “Hunger in Los Angeles” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, marking it's place in history as the first VR experience to be shown at the festival, and since then her work has continued to elicit global recognition at institutions and events such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Brooklyn Museum, World Economic Forum and Venice International Film Festival. In 2017, Nonny was named one of CNET’s 20 Most Influential Latinos in Tech and most recently she received the 2018 WSJ Magazine Technology Innovator of the Year award. Under her leadership, Emblematic has built a critically acclaimed body of work that includes tracking the chaos of the Syrian civil war to working with AT&T on projects that leverage the future of 5G technologies. Her newest breakthrough is Emblematic's WebVR platform REACH which creates scalable distribution in the medium, democratizes content authorship and empowers new voices to share their stories.

  • Annie Lukowski, Co-founder of Vanishing Point Media is an award-winning storyteller and prolific content creator whose early forays into technology-enhanced narrative techniques naturally evolved into a passion for cinematic VR production. She co-founded Vanishing Point Media, a full service virtual reality production company with clients like ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Toyota, and Banana Republic in 2014. VPM partners with forward-thinking brands and agencies to produce industry-leading commercials and provide production and post-production services to studios and corporations alike.

    She previously co-founded WorkingBug Media, a branded entertainment company through which she wrote, directed and produced impactful spots for major brands including Jeep, teenVogue, Maybelline and the USA Network. Annie and WorkingBug are also the creative force behind a number of branded digital comedy series including Random Comedies (Randall Park), Series of Unfortunate People (Keegan-Michael Key) and Road To The Altar (Jaleel White), which won the PGA Award for Outstanding Independent Series. Annie is an accomplished dramatic storyteller as well, having directed the festival- and award-winning shorts The Protest and Waiting for Hello, and produced Have Your Heard About Vukovar?, which premiered at Tribeca and went on to become an Official Selection at over 30 film festivals across four continents. Annie earned her MFA from The USC School of Cinematic Arts and is represented by Circle of Confusion

  • Dawn Thomas, Founder, Koi and Fellow, Oculus Launch Pad

    Trained as a lawyer, Dawn has a background in banking on Wall Street. She started in entertainment at CAA and next as a senior executive at Will Smith's production company, Overbrook, managing projects in film, TV and interactive content marketing. A strategy and content specialist for women and millennials, she has led campaigns for brands like Ford, Fiat, Kraft and Xbox. Recently, she was the Head of Culture Strategy and Content Innovation at an ad agency leading the Samsung and Nike Women brands. She codes (front-end), designs (UI/UX) and is obsessed with innovative storytelling. She's a VR/AR/360 producer and a recent VR fellow with Facebook/Oculus. Currently, she is the Founder of Koi, a publishing and lifestyle platform where original content becomes an immersive, shoppable community

  • Jane Mitchell, Director of Engineering at Within, is someone who embraces the challenges imposed by industry and social bias. Throughout her career she has collaborated with companies who share her enterprising spirit.

    With more than 20 years in engineering and leadership she has transformed convention in a vastly evolving industry. From the dot-com era, to the introduction of smartphones, and today in XR she has led companies, teams, and individuals toward inspiration, growth, and positive change.

    She is an experienced engineer consulting for hundreds of companies, an entrepreneur partnering in multiple startups, and a successful manager cultivating a culture of shared understanding.

    At Within she plays an important role driving ambition toward socializing XR to a broader market. Culling the experiences in her diverse background allows her to continually evolve and lead more effectively.

    Outside of work Jane enjoys challenging social norms and gravity by rock climbing, long(skate)boarding, and riding motorcycles. She is frequently found inciting others to experience all life has to offer.

  • Katrina LaShelle Jefferson, PR and Strategic Partnerships, Onedome

    has a diverse set of professional experiences, all fun, and all focused around Digital Marketing and Technology. Katrina started her career in Supply Chain, working for a software company in Silicon Valley then later moving to an A.I. based chatbot company, serving B2B clients as a Client Services Manager.

    After leaving San Francisco, she moved to Los Angeles and worked for non-profits, spending her time helping families and children in Education and Child Care while obtaining a 2nd degree. Post graduation, Katrina propelled in Fashion and Beauty for Enterprise level organizations, thriving in Product Design, Social Media/Marketing, PR, and Advertising. During her tenure, Katrina has led teams of over 200 people, across multiple countries, built and sustained key client service and Marketing divisions, and landed and managed key accounts for Fortune 500 brands. As an entrepreneur, she's landed speaking engagements, major deals, interactive and fun influencer installations, and publicity for top talent and corporations.

    With over 16 years of Digital and Traditional Marketing and Public Relations, Katrina now focuses her efforts in Emerging Technology, continuing education in Data Science and working with Immersive Art and Tech Entertainment venue Onedome, Managing PR and Strategic Partnerships.
