Description

What is Ruby On Rails:

Ruby on Rails is a popular server-side web application framework written in Ruby. It combines the Ruby programming language with HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create a web application that runs on a web server. Ruby on Rails powers many large websites including Shopify, AirBnb, Kickstarter and Groupon.


About the Bootcamp:

This workshop will give you a basic introduction to the Ruby programming language and the Rails framework, and will cover the following:

  • An introduction to the Ruby language
  • An introduction to the Rails framework
  • The MVC design pattern
  • Demo

You will leave the workshop with a simple working Ruby/Rails app you've built yourself.

About the Instructors:

Instructor: Tamara Jordan

Tamara studied Anthropology at NYU and moved out to the Bay Area after graduation. She joined an ed-tech startup, moving from executive assistant into QA and product, then worked as an account manager at Square. She began learning programming on the side using textbooks and online classes, and is currently a web developer at MasterClass.


Instructor: Nimitha Ramesh

Nimitha is currently a web developer at MasterClass, previously a software engineer intern at Trimian. She studied computer science at SFSU. Nimitha is a techie at heart who loves building user focused products. Besides coding, she enjoys activities like cooking, ice-skating, kayaking. Her favorite programming language is Java and has recently started learning React on Ruby/Rails.


About the TA's:
Chris Jordan
Chris is from the East Coast and has a degree in economics from SUNY Stony Brook. He took computer science classes at Foothill College in Los Altos before attending App Academy's programming bootcamp in 2016. He's been working as a software engineer at MasterClass for the last year.

Mandar Bapaye
Mandar is an experienced web developer, enterprise system architect, and Android developer. He graduated from USC with MS in Computer Science. Mandar previously worked at VMware, PanoLogic, and Samsung Research. Mandar is a Staff Engineer at MasterClass

Fuzz Worley
Fuzz is a college dropout from the East Coast who discovered his appetite for programming while building websites for his personal training business and Bitcoin brokerage. He was a teaching assistant at a programming bootcamp in Miami before moving to San Francisco to work in EdTech for the past 2 years. He’s a big proponent of the idea that credentials are less important than passion and ambition. He is currently a software engineer at MasterClass.

Jimmy Huang
Jimmy is a San Francisco native who received 4 San Francisco city awards for Best New Application while studying Biotechnology at UC Davis. He then joined a biotechnology start up as a Research Associate, which later IPO’d at 1.3 billion USD. During Jimmy’s time as a Research Associate, he realized a lot of what he was doing could be automated, and started learning how to code; he went through App Academy’s program in the summer of 2015, and is now a Software Engineer at MasterClass.
