Event description
Camp ELSO’s Girls Day is an opportunity for girls of all ages in Greater Portland to learn about engineering & engage with local engineers.

About this Event

Girls day is an opportunity for girls of all ages to get accustomed to the engineering fields by attending workshops facilitated by girls majoring in engineering or by community organizations centering on STEM for Black and Brown youth. The participants will be able to take part in two workshops offering a different focus of engineering. Parents of younger children are encouraged to participate in the workshops with their children. For parents of older youth, they are encouraged to attend a panel discussion about engineering programs in the Portland Metropolitan area. In each workshop girls will get the opportunity to partner up with an engineer to solve the task given by facilitators.

This event will also include dinner where participants can share a meal with and engage with/ ask engineers questions. This setting allows engineers to share their journey and lived experiences as women of color in engineering and some recent projects they are doing with event participants. The dinner and the overall event is meant to give the girls a glimpse into a day in the life of an engineer with the themes of civil and chemical engineering.

In addition to the workshops, the panel and the dinner, there will be a film screening of Dream Big, a documentary about the wonders of engineering.
