Event description

Back by popular demand! Unity has teamed up with Spring Forward Festival to host another Girl Game Maker Day. Learn to make video games and get hands on with code, art, and making games fun.

Are you a girl between 9-14 years old interested in making games but don't know where to start? Or maybe you just love playing games and would like to learn more about how they’re made?

Then Girl Game Maker Day is for you!

After last year's successful Girl Game Maker Day, we at Unity are excited to run another session of Girl Game Maker Day at our Brighton office as part of Spring Forward Festival.

This GIRLS ONLY event is a completely FREE session aimed at girls between 9 -14 who are interested in learning more about game making in a safe and fun environment! No previous experience needed.

If you came along to the first Girl Gamer Maker Day, that’s great! If you didn’t, that’s fine too! The material we will cover is similar to what we covered before, but there will also be new material for you to try out!

What will happen during the day?

The day will start off with a brainstorming session (what type of game do you want to make?) followed by a "follow along" workshop led by Sophia Clarke from Unity. At the end of the workshop, the girls will have made the base of a mini-game! Once the workshop is over the girls will have time to customise the game to make it look more like their own. The session will end with a "show and tell".

We recommend all participants to have a look through our interactive tutorials before the session start. You can work through the tutorials in an hour and it will help you get familiar with the interface.

The tutorials can be found under "Basic Tutorials" when you launch Unity. If you get stuck, please feel free to contact us and we will be more than happy to help you out!

Should parents attend?

Parents and guardians don’t need to stick around – feel free to drop your girls off and pick them up at the end of the course. Our team will help the girls through the course.

Of course, parents and guardians who wish to stay are welcome to do so. We have places to sit and coffee to consume.

What should the girls bring?

Girls need to bring a laptop that can connect to wifi with Unity 2017.2 downloaded. If you need help to download Unity, please show up 20 mins early to the session and we will help you! Please make sure you have an active email address ready to use as your username.

Please install Unity version 2017.2, which can be downloaded here:

What software will we use?

We’ll be using Unity to make our games. No prior knowledge of coding is needed, and you don’t need to buy Unity as the free edition is more than enough! You will need to create an account beforehand, which is also free.

We will provide sample projects on the day to help getting started!

What is Unity?

Unity is a free game engine that has been used to create games such as Pokemon Go, Monument Valley, and Cuphead. The scripting language used in Unity is C#, but we will only go into this if requested by an individual; this is a code-optional day :)

Is this a regular event?

GIRL GAME MAKER DAY is an event to encourage girls to pick up technical skills in a safe and fun environment. Girls who enjoy the experience are encouraged to come to our regular free, fortnightly sessions for all kids aged 6-16 at CoderDojo (see the website for details).

Who runs this event?

GIRL GAME MAKER DAY is supported by a volunteer team of mentors recruited from the Brighton video games industry, CoderDojo mentors and volunteers from Unity.

What is CoderDojo?

CoderDojo is a coding club for kids aged 6-16, part of a global non-profit movement – see the CoderDojo website for more details.

What is Spring Forward?

Spring Forward is a month long celebration of the role of women in digital culture and runs throughout March in parallel with Women’s History Month.
