Event description

Description

A brand new chamber orchestra, founded and directed by Royal Academy of Music student Theo Bently Curtin and consisting of some of the finest young musicians studying in London, presents in its second concert a programme which forms two very opposite, but equally regarded, cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire.

Performed by eminent soloist and musical educator Emma Purslow, Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto showcases both sparkling virtuosity and an emotional intensity that is typical of the output of composers living under the authoritarian Soviet regime. Premiered in Madrid, the piece was very well received and embodies Prokofiev's notion of his music evoking the "spirit of Man", as he later described his 5th Symphony. On a similar level, Brahms's Symphony no. 3 is the composer's philosophical signature, containing the musical version of his cryptic life motto, "Free But Happy". Although the shortest of the four Brahms symphonies, it lays bare his psychological state like few of his other works.

Tickets £12 online and on the door. £6 for students and under-25s.
