GHS Theatre Festival, Acting up on the Hill...

 

                              celebrating student artists

 

The Greenville High School Drama Department and All Arts Booster Club are hosting a theatre festival to include competitions and workshops. Their mission is to expose high school drama students to college-level theatre programs and showcase them as eligible university recruitment candidates.

As a high school drama/theatre teacher, surely, you will welcome this unique opportunity to showcase your gifted and talented students. Not only will you earn recognition for your school’s program, but it is an excellent occasion for exposing your students to the next level of learning. Theatre program instructors and students from Furman, Winthrop, Lander, Wofford, and other South Carolina universities will host theatre related workshops and serve as judges to critique one act plays performed by your high school students from district schools across Greenville County. University representatives from Clemson, USC, Furman, Anderson, Wofford and many other universities will be on site to answer program and admission questions specific to their individual school.

Plan for your students to take advantage of several of the workshops; Improvisation, Renaissance Dance, Acting for the Camera, Script Writing, and Ensemble Movement, just to name a few.  Students and directors will want to take home another piece of equipment or costume accessory and will easily accomplish meeting their wishes as they browse through the retail vendor displays located in the atrium across from the university booths.

The day will be jam packed with activity enough to hold everyone’s attention.  From arriving at 9:00 a.m. to attending the awards ceremony at 4:00 p.m. your day will be action packed with learning. There will be a lunch break for everyone to dine on site with our in house fast food vendors.

*****GHS Theatre Festival, Acting on the Hill will culminate the day’s events and activities with an awards ceremony to honor our distinguished guests and to award trophies to the top two schools and the top actress or actor in each category for their fine performances. The top performing group of the festival will receive the:

 “Red Carpet Award,” all expense paid trip to Furman University for a backstage tour and an opportunity to perform their one-act play on the Furman University Campus.  

The top performing monologue actress or actor will receive a $10,000 scholarship from Furman University.

Here's What To Expect:

(The following times are tentative and subject to change. Please revisit after final registration date of Jan. 2nd.)

 

9:00 a.m. - All schools will begin arriving (parking attendants will direct buses/vans)

 

                    Each school will be assigned 2 personal escorts. (1 boy, 1 girl)

 

Escorts will:

 

·         Escort all school groups and individual performers to the        registration area.

 

Registrars will:  

 

·    Collect a preprinted ticket from each director, student, and chaperone and distribute prepaid, logo t-shirts prior to further admittance (additional t-shirts for sale at $15 the day of the event)

 

·         Ensure that the director has printed out all necessary materials for his/her group, including; schedules, maps, scripts/plays, etc. * In the event copies need to be made, there will be a flat $5.00 charge.

 

 

Escorts will:

 

Escort groups to the nearest restroom/drink and then to their assigned location

 

Coffee/snacks will be available for directors, judges, and workshop instructors in Ms. Ottoway’s Room

 

9:30 – All schools should be seated in the auditorium

 

9:40 - Welcome

 

10:00 – Morning workshops will begin in the education hall

 

10:00 –Morning, 1-act play competitions will begin in the auditorium

 

10:00 – Morning monologue competitions will begin in the drama room

 

11:00- Concessions Open

 

12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. – Judges/workshop Instructors will break for lunch.

                                              No competitions/workshops conducted

 

1:00 – Afternoon Workshops, 1-act play competition, and monologue competitions will resume

 

3:00 – Concessions Close

 

3:50 – Judges tabulate scores

 

4:00 – All schools assemble in the auditorium for the Awards Ceremony

 

4:15 – 5:00 – Awards Ceremony in the auditorium and Closing

 

·          Ground Floor Coffee Shop will be available throughout the entire morning.

 

·          Lunch venues will open at 11:00 a.m. and remain open until 3:00 p.m. in the atrium

 

·          Lunch will be served in the “Teachers Lounge,” located behind the registration tables for all judges and workshop instructors.

 

·          High School Directors, judges, and workshop instructors will find snacks and drinks throughout the day in Ms. Ottoway’s Classroom.

 

·          Visit University booths

 

·          Visit Vendor booths

Photo Center - Each performing group will be escorted from their performance to the photo center for a group shot. Souvenir photos will be available for purchase. Plan to take a photo of your group home for display in your school.

FAQs

 

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

All participants must be of high school age and enrolled in a Greenville County School.

ID requirements will be waived. However, each person will need to purchase a ticket.

 

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

All participating schools will provide their own transportation to and from the event.

All buses, trucks, and vans should enter the "teachers" parking lot from Dunbar Street off of Augusta Street. DO NOT TRY TO ACCESS THE STUDENT PARKING AREA as it will be OFF LIMITS and used by a separate event on the day of the festival.  Additional parking spaces are located in the front of the school for visitors and may be accessed from Vardry St off of Augusta Street.

 

What can/can't I bring to the event?

*Only standard, published theatrical works may be performed. Entrants must bring a photocopy of their selections, including the publisher and copyright pages.

In the event copies need to be made, there will be a flat $5.00 charge.

  • All schools will be responsible for carting/carrying their own equipment.  Come prepared.
  •  
  • Lighting and Sound Equipment will be provided.
  •  
  • Input of Prop Weapon Request . All prop weapon requests (i.e., toy swords, guns, rifles) MUST be input ONLINE (attached to individual Acting category entries). Prop weapons are delivered and picked up before and after Acting competition rounds by Festival staff. Schools bringing prop weapons of any type on campus during the Festival will be subject to disqualification in any or all categories
  • In addition to copies of your theatrical works, all schools will be responsible for printing and bringing their tickets, schedules, and maps to the festival.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

No registration/ticket is transferrable.

 

Can I update my registration information?

Schools intending to participate in the theatre festival competitions and workshops should have purchased a free reservation/registration ticket by December 19th.  However, Registration Ticket purchases,confirming your attendance/participation should be purchased by January 2nd. Registration information may be updated until January 2nd. At that time all information will be final.

 

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Once your school's Registration Ticket has been purchased and your registration information has been processed, you will receive a confirmation number, prop weapon request confirmation, school map, festival schedule, tickets, and etc. to print and present during registration the day of the festival.

 

What is the refund policy?

No refunds.

 

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

Names on tickets will be verified with the school's registration form, at the door.

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR BIOS – (Revisit to view updates)

Dr. Hannah Park - Assistant Professor of Dance Lander University

Dr. Park will bring artistic excellence to the GHS Theatre Festival.  A native of South Korea, she currently serves as a dance educator and advocate, artist, movement specialist and researcher for Lander University.  Her PhD, in Dance Education includes an emphasis in research. Additionally, she holds a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies, both from Temple University.  From New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Dr. Park earned a M.F.A. in Dance Performance and Choreography and her B.F.A. in Dance was earned from the prestigious SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance. Among her educational accomplishments, Park boasts of a diploma in Contemporary Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Creative works include but are not limited to: the Isadora Dance Company, Second Avenue Dance Company in New York and she has performed works by Jose Limon and Kun-Yang Lin. Her choreographic works are tremendously notable since, they have debuted in New York and Korea. In Utah, she taught dance through the Arts in Education program, in the elementary schools. It thrills Dr. Park to enrich the lives of students through teaching in diverse settings, dance and choreographic practices, etc. and continued research.

 

Jennifer Sans-Facon - Assistant Professor of Theatre Lander University

Earning her M.F.A. from Western Illinois University in 2010, Facon brought a tremendous amount of talent with her to Lander University.  Some of the courses she teaches are: Theatre History and Literature, Scriptwriting, Scene Design and Stage Lighting, and Makeup and Mask Design. Beauty and the Beast, Jr, Hairspray and Dracula are among her creative works.

 

Monique Sacay-Bagwell - Professor of Theatre Lander University

Monique Sacay-Bagwell - Professor of Theatre Lander University
In 1984, Bagwell earned her A.S. from Kingsborough Community College and went on to earn a B.F.A. from Brooklyn College in 1987.  Then in 1991 she graduated with a M.F.A. from Ohio State University. At Lander, Bagwell teaches a wide range of courses including: the Fundamentals of Oral Interpretation, Performance, Integrated Voice and Movement, and Play Directing to name a few.  She is, also, credited with a wide range of creative works including but not limited to: The Maids, Catfish Moon, and The Glass Menagerie.

 

Standrick Rhodes - GHS Alumni Guest

 Rhodes starred as the Scarecrow in The Wizard of OZ while a GHS student in 2000 and as Tony in West Side Story in 2001. Currently, he teaches 4th and 5th grade special education at Indian Land Elementary School in Rock Hill, SC where he resides. He graduated from Winthrop University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and a Master of Education in Special Education in 2009.

 

Dan Day - Associate Professor of Theater at Wofford


As Associate Professor of Theatre at Wofford, Day aligns his teaching emphasis to that of the theatre major. This approach provides an equal balance between theatre and stagecraft and dramatic literature. His teaching emphasis builds confidence through focused theatre training which builds powerful analytical skills, increases intellectual flexibility and dramatically improves the oral and written act of communication. Day earned his B.A. from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and his M.F.A. from Southern Methodist University.

 

Andrew Vorder Bruegge - Chair, Department of Theatre and Dance; Professor of Theatre and Dance, Winthrop University

Andrew Vorder Bruegge serves as the Director of the Master of Arts in Arts Administration, a position for which he is impressively qualified. He earned his Ph.D. in Theatre Arts at the University of Missouri-Columbia, his M.A. in Theatre at the University of South Carolina-Columbia, and his B.A. in Psychology was earned at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. In addition to his training, Bruegge has a wide variety of teaching experience in theatre and dance courses including; acting, directing, theatre history, dramatic literature, dramatic theory, playwriting, script analysis, musical theatre, theatre management, voice and diction, stage combat, early dance, and dance for the theatre. His directing credits are impressively numerous. However, it is his interest in playwriting that has captured his attention to compose full-length dramas in recent years.

 

Boone Hopkins - Assistant Professor of Theatre, Converse University


Hopkins earned his degrees from an impressive list of Universities; Bachelor’s degree from Brenau University, Master of Fine Arts in Directing and Acting Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University, and his PhD from the University of Kansas. Hopkins was actively involved with directing and designing several productions while pursuing his degrees and was the recipient of the Kilty Kane Award for his work with the Kansas University Theatre. As well, Hopkins was honored twice for his outstanding graduate teaching. He continues with his interest in directing, acting theory and the history of directing, while teaching acting, directing, script analysis, theatre history and performance studies. Hopkins is especially interested in how theatre is made and how communication and influence move between artists during the creative process.

 

Marta Lanier  - Fine Arts Recruiter at Furman University

A violist, Marta attended the Greenville Fine Arts Center, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities and Emory University.

 

 Meagan Azar - Assistant Professor of Acting & Directing at Furman University

In 2003, Meagan graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in Theatre and summa cum laude honors. She went on to study at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and earned her Master of Fine Arts in Acting Pedagogy in 2006. While at the University of Alabama, Meagan emphasized her study on theatre movement which included; stage combat, period styles, jazz, ballet, mask work, and Laban. She also studied musical theatre, voice, and directing.
Later in 2006, Meagan earned an appointment as the Education Director of California Theater Center where her mission originated to instill an appreciation for the arts in young people. Her students have gone on to attend prestigious theatre schools that included; Southern California, American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and Carnegie Mellon. Currently, Meagan serves as the Assistant Professor of Acting and Directing at Furman University.
