The global COVID-19 pandemic affected many countries around the world. The rise of the spread necessitated measures from various governments as a response to mitigate the spread and deaths of COVID-19.

What remained popular as a measure was the restriction of economic activities and the lockdown of populations. This was no different in Ghana, as the Executive Arm passed the E.I 2020 to legitimize draconian measures in the name of public safety. It became popularly accepted that it’s easier to rebuild the economy than to resurrect the dead. However, little attention was given to small businesses whose livelihoods and survival are directly attached to their businesses. The freedom to do business and create livelihood opportunities were curtailed.

The impact of these restrictions on small businesses has been huge. Small businesses have had increased costs of production with many collapsing as they meander their way through various COVID-19 restrictions. Having given enormous power to restrict economic activity to the government, it is not an easy process to have the government relinquish such power; businesses may have to live with these restrictions longer than anticipated.

This event shall explore the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on small businesses in Ghana and how their freedom of creating opportunities and prosperity was restricted by the state.
