GGRM September Field Trip - Tour of Pampanito
September 19, 2015
Doors open at 9am, FM engine fires up at 10am.
Members and friends of GGRM are invited to tour the historic WWII submarine USS Pampanito (SS-383) at pier 45 in San Francisco. One of the four main engines stills runs and will be started by Jim Kyser, a GGRM member and a former Engineman on a similar diesel sub. Jim will also guide us through the other compartments.
The history of Pampanito's Fairbanks-Morse diesels is linked to the engine in GGRM's F-M locomotive 1487. This is common to many railroad engines, including GM's EMD and ALCO engines. However, you will note that that while the basic structure of the marine engine and the rail road engines are similar, all the operating systems are quite different.
Pampanito served in the Pacific theatre for 13 months from 1943-1945, sinking 6 enemy ship. However her most historic feat was the rescue of 73 prisoners of war found adrift at sea after their Japanese transport was torpedoed by other US subs. An ironic fate of war.
You may bring your own lunch to eat on the pier, or partake of the many nearby restaurants in the Fisherman's Wharf area.
Pampanito opens at 9:00am. The Fairbanks Morse opposed piston engine will be fired up at 10:00am. A donation of $12 is requested for the tour of Pampanito.
While in the area you might also want to vist the Maritime National Historic Park
Since parking is limited and expensive, ride sharing is encouraged. We also recommend public transportation. Muni has started direct streetcar service from the CalTrain station. The Powell-Hyde Street Cable Car line starts at SF Maritime and the Powell-Mason Street line starts 3 blocks away from Pampanito.
