Description

Getting Youth UNSTUCK using Motivational Interviewing

Target Audience

This full-day intensive is intended for supervisory and direct line staff working with adolescents in DYCD-funded programs.

Overview
Is there such a thing as an unmotivated young person? Do you sometimes struggle to motivate youth? Does it seem like no matter what you do, the youth you work with stay STUCK? Using video, role play, and youth scenarios, this workshop will examine the guiding principles of an approach called Motivational Interviewing. Through exploring the stages of change, you will learn how to plan interventions that meet the youth where s/he is and help them move forward in their life. You will gain skills to facilitate conversations with young people that decrease their ambivalence and encourage motivation for positive change. You will learn to listen for and elicit a young person’s internal reasons for making changes in their lives and help him/her achieve their goals.

Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:

(1) Identify the guiding principles of motivational interviewing

(2) Explore the stages of behavioral change

(3) Build skills for decreasing ambivalence

(4) Develop conversational tools for increasing internal motivation

Facilitated by: Andrew Hamid, PhD
