Getting to Zero: Freshkills Park

Photo by Alex Maclean; Image courtesy of Freshkills Park and the City of New York

While the city once relied on a network of several landfills across the outer boroughs, by the 1990s only the colossal Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island remained. Today, more than a decade after its closure, the site is in the midst of a transformation into a new crown jewel in the city’s vast system of public parks.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in more than a century. When completed, this enormous green space will be home to everything from playgrounds and athletic fields to large-scale art installations. The park is being built, and is scheduled to be opened in phases, through 2036.

Join us for a tour with NYC Parks and Department of Sanitation (DSNY) officials! Bus transportation to and from the Staten Island Ferry terminal in St. George will be provided to registered attendees of this tour. The exact location of the bus pick-up will be made available via email upon completion of registration. Times listed on this page include transportation to and from the ferry terminal; the tour itself will last approximately one hour.

Open House New York thanks the Freshkills Park team for making this tour possible.
